October Pre-Law Updates and Opportunities |

Classes are in session, and it is a great time to be a pre-law Jayhawk. This next month, think about opportunities to explore and prepare for law school:

Attend an upcoming virtual law school visit by the University of Missouri School of Law on October 29. (Register to attend.)
- Join the KU Department of Religious Studies for a lunch-and-learn with KU and UC Berkley alumna Sarah Hoskinson on October 29 at 12:00 PM in Bailey Hall 318. Sarah will discuss her journey to a successful legal career and answer student questions. (No Registration Required).

The University of Kansas School of Law is hosting a special open house for juniors and seniors about applying to law school on Thursday, November 21 at 5:30 PM in Green Hall. (Register to Attend).

The January LSAT registration deadline is December 3. This is the next LSAT open for registration in the 2024-2025 academic year. (More Information Here.)

Spring Enrollment Information |
As a pre-law student at KU, you are assigned both an academic and pre-law advisor. Each advisor provides unique support to your journey at KU. Don't hesitate to reach out to your academic advisor for help enrolling in spring classes and questions about graduation requirements. Some questions to ask your academic advisor about during your advising appointment include:

Are there opportunities to take classes with a professor again this semester? Taking multiple classes with the same professor can help them prepare better and more personable letters of recommendation for you when applying to law school. Try identifying a couple of professors you have enjoyed and may want to take classes with again.

Are there any writing or reading-intensive courses I can take in my major? Classes that challenge and grow your writing and reading skills are great for law school preparation. Law schools will expect you to have effective writing and reading skills before you start.

Is there any opportunity to do research like a capstone, undergraduate thesis, or directed readings? Opportunities to work on an independent research project can help practice the skills needed for law school. Projects that require you to take in a lot of information, interpret it, and communicate a well-reasoned conclusion help practice the foundational skills for legal research. Remember, law school will teach you how to research legal issues but having good communication and analytical skills will help you feel more prepared when you start.
- Are there any classes in my major to help me get exposure to law? You're going to law school to learn the law, but opportunities in your undergraduate degree to get exposure to different fields of law can be helpful. These can help you stay on track for graduation and explore different opportunities after graduation and current issues in law.

October Pre-Law Tip: Consider finding a campus club, volunteer group, part-time job, or internship. If you’re already involved, think about ways to challenge yourself by building new skills or gaining fresh experiences. Law school admissions offices look for applicants with well-developed skills from meaningful experiences rather than those with casual involvement in multiple clubs just to show an interest in law.
