Jordan Schnitzer announces investment in PSU arts and downtown |
Portland State University and downtown Portland will benefit greatly from a generous gift announced last week by renowned Portland real estate developer and philanthropist Jordan Schnitzer. A $10 million gift commitment will provide capital support for a new School of Art + Art History + Design building, as well as operational funding for the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art here at PSU, enhancing the campus as a downtown arts destination. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and Congressman Earl Blumenauer were on hand for the announcement. PSU President Ann Cudd wrote about Schnitzer’s gift on her blog.

Xan Arch named new University Library Dean |
Portland State University named Xan Arch as the Dean of the PSU Library. Arch is the current Dean of the Library at the University of Portland and will cross the river to Portland State to take on her new role on August 1, 2024.

Caitlyn Phipps appointed Secretary to Board of Trustees |
Caitlyn Phipps was named Secretary to the Board of Trustees on Friday, April 5. The Secretary serves as a liaison between the board and university administration. Phipps was nominated for the position by PSU President Ann Cudd.

It’s a convenient way to ensure you’re aware of any accommodations the students need to succeed in your courses. Join the Portland State University Transfer Faculty & Staff List curated by the Transfer & Returning Student Resource Center (TRSRC) to enhance visibility and community for transfer students. Your participation will help students identify with former transfer peers and foster a sense of belonging. Complete the form by Tuesday, April 16 to be included in the Transfer Champions list for Transfer Appreciation Day on April 23.

RSVP to Data Champions presentation this Thursday |
The Office of Student Success launched a pilot program called Student Success Data Champions this past winter. This one-term-long program is designed to build skills in data literacy, promote equity-minded analysis, and expand the capacity of PSU’s faculty, staff, and administrators to make data-informed decisions. The program had over 70 applications and 20 accepted participants. The Data Champions will present their learnings to the campus community on April 11 at 2-3:30pm in ASRC 515. All are invited to attend.

Research and Graduate Studies (RGS) is hosting three open forums this month to inform the next phase of its strategic planning process (separate from the wider PSU effort). The forums will utilize the dynamic World Café format, designed to foster open, creative dialogues on key themes, such as: Enhancing Graduate Student Education, Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Advancing Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Strengthening Research Operations.

'Changing the Narrative: Epilogue' opens this Saturday in Portland, showcasing the impact of a project featuring 10 comics created by PSU students on homelessness. Led by PSU senior instructor Kacy McKinney, the exhibition is at ILY2Too in Lloyd Center Mall from April 13 - May 11.

The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships seeks volunteers to read and score more than 1,500 PSU General Scholarship applications, with a commitment of 7-10 hours between May 3 and May 24. Training will be provided virtually on April 18 at 2 p.m. Sign up to help identify deserving students and contribute to their success.

The Student Research Symposium (SRS) seeks PSU faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to support more than 90 presenters on Wednesday, May 8. Roles include poster judges and room moderators. Lunch, snacks and training provided. Complete the SRS Volunteer Interest Form to join.

OHSU-PSU celebrate National Public Health Week |
Last week, the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health (SPH) celebrated National Public Health Week (NPHW) through a week full of TV appearances on KOIN and public events to share a better understanding of what public health is, why it matters, and how it impacts our daily lives. Dean Paul K. Halverson shares, "National Public Health Week is the biggest week of the year for our field, as it gives us the chance to showcase the critical work we do to promote the health of individuals, families, communities and populations."
