2018 Municipal Election: TDSB Trustee Results

The 2018 Municipal Election, which includes the election for the office of Toronto District School Board trustee, was held on Monday, Oct. 22. To view the official list of the newly elected Trustees, please visit the TDSB election results webpage.
The TDSB expresses their thanks for all candidates who placed their name on the ballot to be a candidate for School Trusteee.
Please note that Trustees elected in the 2018 Municipal Election will take office on Dec. 1, 2018. For a list of current Trustees, please visit our Trustee webpage.
Statement Re: Tragic Events in Pittsburgh

The thoughts of the students and staff of the Toronto District School Board are with the victims, their loved ones and the larger Jewish community following Saturday's deadly shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Legalization of Cannabis

The recreational use of cannabis became legal in Canada on Oct. 17, 2018. The Toronto District School Board has provided key information to parents, students and staff.
Please note that despite the changes to cannabis-related laws, the recreational use of cannabis is not permitted on TDSB property.

18th Annual Child Care Worker & Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day

On Oct. 16, 2018, the Toronto District School Board celebrated the commitment, hard work and professionalism of Early Childhood Educators and Child Care Workers who work with young children. This year’s theme was Champions for Children.

George Webster Elementary School Grand Opening

On Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2018, the Toronto District School Board celebrated the opening of the new George Webster Elementary School building. It included the unveiling of a time capsule kept since the original school’s opening in 1954, student performances and a ribbon cutting ceremony.

TDSB Releases EQAO and OSSLT Results

On Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018, the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released achievement results for the Toronto District School Board.

TDSB Launches Health & Physical Education Parent Guide

The Toronto District School Board has launched a guide to help parents and guardians better understand the Ministry of Education’s 2010 re-issued Health and Physical Education Curriculum (HPEC).
The guide includes helpful information regarding the 2010 re-issued HPEC (Grades 1-8), including grade-by-grade highlights of what’s being taught, comparisons to the previous curriculum and questions and answers.

BOARD MEETING NOTES
Delegation of Powers and Duties Under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act [3513] 

The Board decided to delegate its powers and duties under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Privacy Act to the Director of Education. The Director has the authority to designate, in writing, appropriate staff for implementation, coordination and day-to-day management of these powers and duties.

Integrated Equity Framework Action Plan: Year Two Update [3493] 

Trustees received the Integrated Equity Framework Action Plan – Year Two Update. It provides updated information regarding the plan’s commitments for 2017/18 and the work that was completed during the last school year.
Moving forward, the transformative equity work, which began with the Integrated Equity Framework, will carry-on under the Multi-Year Strategic Plan.

Aboriginal Community Advisory Committee: Indigenous Curriculum

The Board decided that the Chair will write to the Ministry of Education to express the urgency and importance of returning to Indigenous Curriculum writing initiatives immediately, as part of honouring the commitments made to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action #62 and #63.
The writing sessions were to update provincial curriculum documents with more Indigenous content. They were cancelled in July 2018 by the Government of Ontario.

Multi-Year Strategic Plan: Action Plans [3511]

Trustees received the action plans related to the Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP).
The action plans provide specific details and timelines on work that will support the goals outlined in the MYSP. These plans capture a great deal of what is happening across the system; however, they are not an exhaustive list of all the work underway in the TDSB.

Ministry of Education Consultation on Education Reform: Inclusion of Student Voice

On Sept. 28, 2018, the Ministry of Education released its consultation on education reform, but the Board believes the consultation is solely aimed at parents. The Board decided that the Chair will send a letter to the Minister of Education to advocate for the inclusion of student voice in any and all consultations by the Government of Ontario that relate to education issues and curriculum changes.
The Chair will also write to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association requesting that they also advocate for the inclusion of student voice.

Pausing of Parent Reaching Out Grants 

The Government of Ontario paused the Parent Reaching Out (PRO) Grants, which education groups and school councils rely on for local and board-wide initiatives that educate and engage students, parents and their communities.
This funding has supported the Parents as Partners Conference, and workshops and activities related to Indigenous awareness, wellness initiatives, parenting and math.
Trustees decided that the Chair will write to the Minister of Education to request that the PRO Grants be immediately reinstated.
