Happy New Year, Brebeuf! As we step into 2025, it's the perfect time to reflect on the past and set positive intentions for the year ahead. Mental health plays a key role in shaping how we approach life’s challenges, so why not make it a priority this year? Here are some mental health tips (many of which you have heard from me before) that can help you feel your best in 2025:
Start Small with Goals
New Year's resolutions can be motivating, but it's important to keep them realistic. Instead of setting overwhelming goals, focus on small, achievable steps. Whether it's trying a new hobby, improving your sleep routine, or practicing mindfulness for 5 minutes a day, small changes can have a big impact. Break big goals down into smaller actions, and celebrate each win along the way!
Pro Tip: Write down your goals in a journal. Revisit them regularly to see how much you've grown.
Prioritize Self-Care
In the hustle and bustle of school, extracurriculars, and social life, it’s easy to forget to take care of yourself. Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s necessary. Make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether that’s reading, exercising, spending time outside, watching a show, or listening to your favorite music.
Pro Tip: Set aside “me-time” each day, even if it's just for 15 minutes. Your mental health will thank you.
Find your People
It’s important to surround yourself with people who lift you up. This year, aim to strengthen relationships with friends and family who make you feel heard, valued, and supported and know it’s ok to take some space from those who do not. Also, don't hesitate to reach out if you're struggling emotionally. Whether it’s talking to a parent, another relative, family friend or therapist, or someone at school, remember seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Pro Tip: Check in with a friend or family member regularly to make sure everyone feels supported and connected.
Limit Social Media Time
While social media can be fun, we all know it can also have a negative impact on mental health if used too much. Constant comparison, pressure to perform, and the feeling of being left out are common challenges with social media. Try limiting your screen time or curating your feeds to show positive, uplifting content that makes you feel good about yourself.
Pro Tip: Set a time limit for social media each day, and take breaks to connect with people in person.
Get Enough Sleep
Sleep plays a vital role in mental and physical health. When you're well-rested, you’re more focused, less irritable, and better equipped to handle stress. Aim for 8–10 hours of sleep each night to recharge your body and mind for the day ahead.
Pro Tip: Set a consistent bedtime and create a relaxing nighttime routine to help you unwind before sleep.
Be Open About Your Feelings
If you're feeling overwhelmed, sad, or anxious, remember you're not alone. Mental health struggles are more common than you think, and reaching out for help is the best thing you can do for yourself. Don't bottle up your feelings; whether it's talking to a friend, family member, or professional, expressing your emotions is key to working through them.
Pro Tip: Keep a feelings journal where you can jot down your emotions, which can be a good first step toward understanding them.
As you look forward to the new year, remember that mental health is a journey, not a destination. Take things one day at a time, and be kind to yourself along the way. Here’s to a year filled with growth, positive mindsets, and good mental health!
