Welcoming New Masters Students

First-year students in the MA in Higher Education and Student Affairs program met at Founders Hall with Professor Mike Funk, Director of our Higher Education Programs, along with Professors Liang Zhang, Mike Hoa Nguyen, and several continuing MA students for a new student orientation and get-to-know-you event. Students were able to take professional headshots, grab a drink and some food, and chat with their classmates about their previous experiences, excitement for this new academic year, and more.

Study Abroad with Higher Education

Türkiye

Applications to NYU Steinhardt study abroad in Türkiye are now open! Global Perspectives: Higher Education in Türkiye is a 3-credit elective course allowing students to universities in Istanbul, Ankara, and the Cappadocia areas; meet with leaders, policy makers, faculty, and students; and learn about Türkiye's higher education opportunities. South Africa

Professor Moja led a group of students on a study abroad trip to Cape Town and Pretoria in South Africa this July where students were able to explore South African social and educational reform since the end of apartheid.

Meet Mehmet Ali Yılık

Steinhardt School of Education is pleased to welcome visiting scholar Mehmet Ali Yılık. Mehmet holds a PhD in Educational Administration and Planning from Türkiye’s top public research-intensive university - Middle East Technical University. He studies higher education policy with a specialization in university-industry relations, higher education management, and internationalization of higher education. Dr. Yılık is funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye and will be studying micro-credentials and their roles in higher education and industry. Dr. Yılık is looking forward to “experiencing rich cultural activities and benefiting from limitless opportunities that NYC may offer.” He is offering a presentation on his research on Turkish higher education: Thursday, December 1 - register here!

Alumnus Wins NASPA Award

Juan Carlos Matos (MA ’11), Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs for Diversity and Inclusion at Fordham University, was awarded the 2022 prize for “Outstanding Contribution to Higher Education.” His NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program mentee, coworkers, interns, and students nominated him for this award, showing their strong support of him and his commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and social justice in higher education and student affairs. He cited the HESA program as instrumental in his development as an administrator and teaching him the importance of intersectional and inclusive work with students.

LOOP Leadership Transition and Note from the Editor

We are delighted that Hannah Ford, MA candidate in HESA, is joining the In the LOOP team as Assistant Editor. She brings rich experience and great enthusiasm to the team.
