Fall is a busy time in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Highlights of activities this semester include:
September: J.S. Ward Society presents Physician-in-Residence Dr .Jeff Willams who will hold office hours for students and present an evening lecture; 4th Annual Collegiate Recovery Academy, featuring Jaime Harper, MS, LPC-MHSP (TEMP), NCC, CPRS and Rebecca Sledge Johnson, LPC-MHSP, ATR; Healing in Harmony event featuring Restorative Yoga. Pi Beta Sigma hosts a community service event in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank. In addition, the junior level social work classes took a field trip in September to the Metro Office of Family Safety as part of the Interviewing and Recording Skills class. The students and faculty received a tour of the FSC, conducted by Courtney Muller, Director of Outreach and Community Education, and learned about the services available through the FSC, as well as partnerships and collaborations they have with multiple service agencies throughout Metro Nashville and Davidson County.
October: Pi Beta Sigma hosts a community service event in partnership with "The Store Nashville."
Other activities: The Society of Physics Students (Physics Club) meets monthly. Some of the meetings will involve speakers and presenters to assist students in pursuing a career or graduate study in physics. Some speakers may discuss their research in physics. The Department of Physics will host a group of professors and students)from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center to share with students about the medical physics program there to learn what is involved in a career in medical physics. The department also provides free tutoring in physics four nights per week, with two hours at each session for students in physics classes.
Highlights of accomplishments from the 2023-24 school year: 17 students were awarded for their research during the Student Scholars Symposium, 10 students had papers accepted for Sigma Tau Delta National Honors Society Conference in St. Louis, 10 students received the J.S. Ward Research Fellowship, 9 students were honored by Alpha Chi, 8 students presented at the American Schools of Research Conferences, 7 students received awards at this year's Southeast Journalism Conference in Troy, Alabama, 6 students presented at the Southern Literary Conference, 5 students presented at the Lanier Center for Archaeology Conference, 4 students inducted into The Herman G. LaVelle Scholars Program, 3 students have been awarded Langford-Yates Fellowships for Summer 2024, 3 students presented at the Evangelical Theological Society Annual Conference, 2 students’ creative works were accepted for the Southern Literary Magazine, 2 students won the Social Work Leadership Award, 1 student presented at the Society for Biblical Literature Conference, 1 student presented at the annual Biblical Archaeology Fest, 1 student co-authored one article in Transcultural Mobilities and another article in Memories & PLOS open access journal.
