Radford University Strategic Planning process has commenced |
The following announcement is included on behalf of the Strategic Planning Committee’s co-chairs, Angela Joyner and Sharon Roger Hepburn.
We are excited to announce that the process to develop a comprehensive and forward-looking strategic plan for the university has begun. The new strategic plan will serve as a roadmap to enhance Radford University’s mission, vision, values and goals over the next six years. The process will take about a year and culminate with a proposed plan for the Board of Visitors next fall.
The committee, which includes representation from students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members and administrators, held its first meeting on Sept. 13. The president provided the charge to the committee. The process, methodology and general timeline were laid out, and four sub-teams were identified as the overarching themes of the strategic plan: Student Success, Academic Achievement, Administrative Excellence and External Engagement and Partnerships. These sub-teams will meet every two weeks through this semester.
Please be sure to visit the website for the strategic plan, which will provide the timeline, progress and opportunities for engagement. Updates from the strategic planning committee and additional information will be posted on the website.
We will continue to provide updates on the process and details for input from our constituents. Go Highlanders!

Cybersecurity Month: Spotting a phishing e-mail |
Phishing e-mails are one of the most common tactics used by cybercriminals to attack Radford University. Their goal is to steal sensitive information such as your username, password and cellphone number to breach your Radford account, your financial information and Radford University.
These e-mails often appear to be from a legitimate source, such as your supervisor, a colleague or even the president. Recognizing a phishing e-mail is essential to protecting your personal information and the university.
| |
Common characteristics of phishing e-mails include:
-
Mismatched sender name and e-mail address. In this instance, you may recognize the sender, but the e-mail comes from a generic address. For example, if the sender appears as “IT Helpdesk,” but the e-mail comes from an address like workmail1@gmail.com, this is likely phishing.
-
Urgency or threats. These e-mails often include phrases like, “Your account will be suspended!” or “You’ve been hacked! Act now!” to pressure a quick action.
- Misspellings and grammar mistakes. It’s very common for phishing e-mails to contain spelling errors or awkward phrasing.
-
Too good to be true offers. We often see e-mails offering items like “Free Yamaha Baby Grand Piano” or “Free Miller Dynasty 300 TIG Welder.”
- Requesting alternative communication. Bad actors will often include a separate reply e-mail in their phishing to take the interaction away from Radford e-mail services. This enables them to avoid Radford University security measures.
By being vigilant and knowing how to spot phishing e-mails, we can significantly reduce the risk of a successful phishing attack.
If you feel you have received a phishing e-mail, please forward the e-mail to ITSecurity@radford.edu.
