Director's Note
Earlier this week, I was planning on sharing a host of resources with you. Suffice it to say that things have changed and the state of the world at the moment invites brevity, focus, and a fresh helping of both compassion and action. So, four items of note:
- We have a few spots remaining in today's Creating Video with Visual Literacy session (11am–12:30pm). This virtual workshop will be really helpful to any instructors that use video in their teaching.
- There are also a few open spots for this afternoon's excellent session with Vicki L. Baker, author of Charting Your Path to Full: A Guide for Women Associate Professors (1–2pm).
- Burnout is real. Some of you have been sharing stories; I am seeing more in print on the subject. What I appreciated about this New York Times piece from last week is that I felt see and I came away with some surprising and practical strategies. Other posts that have come across my feed emphasized creating time for focused work. Here are a few that I am trying: close apps, turn off email notifications, pause your inbox, block distracting websites, and/or structure your time with Tomato Timer. So, as I have said before, stay strong, give yourself some grace, know that you are not alone, and consider giving something new a try. You never know what might provide a bit of relief.
- No matter what subject you are teaching, your students bring with them a host of contexts, experiences, concerns, beliefs, understandings...Well you get the point. If you aren't sure what is on your students' minds, why not ask? Not sure how to talk about Russia and Ukraine? Not sure if you should even bring it up? Here is a short piece from Inside Higher Ed this morning. We have also have a teaching resources page, Responding to Critical Incidents, that might also be of use.

FINAL CALL!
Developing Your Voice and Crafting a Compelling Narrative
with Vicki L. Baker
TODAY (Feb. 25) from 1–3pm
In Fall 2021, the Pew FTLC ran a Faculty Learning Community entitled "Charting Your Path to Full Professor" for female-identifying associate professors contemplating full professor. We are excited to announce that we will once again be hosting Vicki L. Baker, author of the book, Charting Your Path to Full: A Guide for Women Associate Professors, today!
This two-part event will offer a first session (from 1–2pm) that focuses on an introduction/refresher to the persuasion techniques featured in Chapter 7 of Dr. Baker's book, Charting Your Path to Full: A Guide for Women Associate Professors. The second session (from 2–3pm) offers a deeper dive of this topic in which participants explore and commit to post-workshop actions they can take.
***Unless you were a participant in the Fall 2021 Charting Your Path to Full FLC, you must participate in Session I before you can participate in Session II.***

Visual Literacy and Critical Thinking On a daily basis, our students negotiate a myriad of visual media, within and beyond the classroom. How can we support their engagement with these materials in nuanced and informed ways? This series offers participants an introduction to core concepts and practices associated with visual literacy. The sessions can be taken independently, but also are designed to complement one another. Consider combining two or more workshops bridging theory with practice to support student learning. Apply for our Teaching Innovation Grant by March 15
Our Teaching Innovation Grants (TIG) are intended to support faculty in pursuing innovative projects that enhance teaching and learning. These projects range from cutting-edge, research-based teaching and learning innovations, to innovations that are new to one's field or new to the individual faculty member. The Teaching Innovation Grant encourages and supports the launching of NEW ideas.

Inclusive Teaching for Equitable Learning
ACUE Micro Course
Begins May 16, 2022
In partnership with the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE), faculty have the opportunity to participate in this micro-course focused on the learning and implementing of research-based practices, each shown to improve student success. This online micro-course will be professionally facilitated and will allow the cohort of faculty to share insights and ideas and is FREE to GVSU faculty!
Participants in this micro-course can expect to explore the following:
- Managing the Impact of Biases
- Reducing Microaggressions in Learning Environments
- Addressing Imposter Phenomenon and Stereotype Threat
- Creating Inclusive Learning Environments
- Designing Equity-Centered Courses

April 13 from 5–6:30pm
Dr. Sheila Jaswal, associate professor of Chemistry and member of the Biophysics and Biochemistry Program at Amherst College, will be talking to the transformative power of inclusive spaces in STEM.
