Divisional Deans Appointed

Faculty and staff in the college met with candidates for divisional dean positions in May and June. Congratulations to the following inaugural divisional deans:

SPOTLIGHT ON STAFF

We hosted Summer Jam 2023, the college’s annual staff appreciation event, June 15. Staff were honored for academic, financial, and technical support, as well as team work and a new award this year for new staff.
Pam Armentrout, graduate coordinator in the math department, has made a significant impact on the success of the graduate program and exhibited outstanding proficiency in advising and mentoring graduate students. Read about her Academic Support Award.
Christine Cheney, director of undergraduate laboratories in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, is responsible for organizing more than 100 graduate teaching assistants. Read about her Academic Suport Award.
Showni Medlin-Crump, office manager for the Department of Physics and Astronomy, works closely with the department head to manage nearly all department operations for more than 200 people. Read about her Academic Support Award.
Marla Roberts has served the Office of the Dean for 10 years and is an asset not only to the deans and directors of the college, but to department heads, faculty, and staff. Read about her Academic Support Award.
Kelly Kramer, business manager in the Department of World Languages and Cultures, is organized, communicative, interpersonal, and shows great leadership skills. Read about her Financial Support Award
Daniel Tipton, director of the Biology Service Facility, knows about a range of topics from electrical wiring loads to autoclave repair and leads his team by example. Read about his Technical Support Award.
The Humanities Shared Services team is a combination of colleagues who have quickly become an extraordinarily strong team and include Jessica Black, Megan Cottrell, and Mitchell Harper. Read more about their Teamwork Award.
Burnette Crombie was hired in spring 2021 as the undergraduate program assistant in the Department of Mathematics and quickly learned everything she needed to accomplish. Read more about her New Staff Member Award.

NEWS & NOTEWORTHY

UT Knoxville has joined The Conversation—an independent source for news articles and informed analysis written by the academic community and edited by journalists for the general public. Faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences are some of the most active participants of this partnership.
Professor Bill Hardwig wrote about Cormac McCarthy’s fearless approach to writing. Professor Asafa Jalata continued his work on Africa. Associate Professor Kelsey Ellis wrote about the start of the 2023 hurricane season. Professor Beauvais Lyons explains vernacular art.
Open Office Hours for Website Support

WATE-TV: University of Tennessee professor on Cormac McCarthy’s impact on Knoxville, American literature
UT Associate Professor of English Bill Hardwig has been working on a book about McCarthy’s writings that he plans to complete in the next two years. “The first things he ever published were in The Phoenix which is a literary journal here which was housed in the English Department here at UT,” said Hardwig. McCarthy went back to UT after leaving the Air Force but never graduated.
WBIR: Featured speaker at UT graduate hooding on Saturday to be a Deaf scientist getting her PhD
On Saturday, a woman will take to the stage and after years of work, claim her PhD. She will then speak to the graduates and their families, taking the podium as the featured speaker at the University of Tennessee's graduate hooding ceremony on Saturday.
