Celebrate 40 Years of Open Space |
What is Open Space?
Westminster Open Space is a City-funded program established in 1985 to preserve natural land, enhance quality of life, and protect Westminster’s unique environmental character. Supported by a dedicated sales tax, it has conserved over 3,700 acres—15% of the city’s land—featuring trails, scenic views, wildlife corridors, and native ecosystems. The program integrates open space into urban development to ensure long-term environmental sustainability, passive recreation, and community well-being.

Restoration in Action: Pull, Plant, Protect! |
Our upcoming volunteer opportunities will dive into some of the most critical aspects of land restoration. At home, pulling weeds might feel like a simple step chore: remove, toss, and move on. In Open Space, however, the process is much more intentional. When large areas of invasive plants are removed, the job isn’t done. Replanting or seeding right after ensures those bare patches don’t get quickly taken over again by weeds.
Nature doesn’t like gaps, so if we don’t step in, invasives will. That’s why we focus on replanting with native plants (species adapted to our local soils, climate, and wildlife). These plants not only hold the ground we clear, but they also provide food and shelter for pollinators and support other wildlife. By joining us, you’ll be helping create a healthier, more resilient ecosystem right here in Westminster’s Open Space.
