Guidance on New Overtime Rules

If you are an employer, recently issued US Department of Labor final rules might result in an increase in the number of your staff to which you must pay overtime.

On May 18, 2016, the Department issued new Fair Labor Standards Act overtime rules which will take effect on December 1, 2016.

The result is that an estimated 4.2 million Americans now classified as exempt employees will be reclassified into hourly workers and therefore eligible for overtime pay. The Labor Department estimates that 300,000 non-hospital health care workers may be impacted. It behooves employers to prepare to implement the rules now. TMA has created a guide for physicians dealing with new overtime regulations. Read more here.
NAM Bylaws Updates
NAM’s full bylaws are 13 pages long and have not been reviewed in many years. There are small wording and housekeeping changes that need to be made such as always referring to the President of the society as a “he.” Our society also needs the flexibility to be able to operate efficiently and utilize modern technology for conference calls and virtual meetings. These housekeeping changes can be made more easily at the board level with your elected leaders giving input, and allows the board to effectively govern your organization. Full member votes will ALWAYS be held for any bylaw proposed change that will impact membership such as a new member category or a change in the academy’s dues structure. NAM members with voting privileges will receive a ballot in the mail in October; these ballots will be due back to NAM within 30 days.

We request that you look for your ballot in the mail in October, cast your vote, and return the ballot within 30 days using the self-addressed and stamped postcard.
