Dear Students:

COVID-19 has dramatically transformed UMKC life as we’ve known it. Since the advent of coronavirus locally, we’ve been making rapid decisions to keep our students, faculty and staff safe and healthy. Even two weeks ago, it would have been hard to imagine the profound changes to daily life on campus and in our community. Thank you for your patience and support – and your questions -- as we have worked through this together.
Early Checkout
We encourage those students who have the ability to vacate the residence halls and return home to do so. However, our residence halls will remain open and available to our students who are unable to move out. Dining services will be providing meals on a carry-out basis going forward.

Housing Discounts
UMKC, along with the other three universities in the UM System, will provide housing and dining discounts to students who move out early. Policies for discounts and refunds related to other areas such as parking and the rec center are under development and will be announced in the near future.
Students who decide to move out:
  • Will receive a housing discount of 45% for the semester if they leave the residence hall by April 3, the Friday after spring break.

  • The discount will be applied to the student’s account, and a refund will be issued as appropriate.

  • Cancellation fees and current late payment and financing charges will be waived until the end of the semester.

  • An appeals process will be available to those students with extenuating circumstances.
Dining Discounts

Regarding your dining account, your balance will be carried forward to Fall 2020, or you can request an exception by checking a box on the online early checkout form. In that case, a credit will be applied to your student account.

As you weigh this decision, think carefully about factors such as the financial implications on your budget, whether you have access to alternative housing and the impact the discount may have on your financial aid. Financial aid information and guidelines are available by calling the Financial Aid office at (816) 235-1154.

How to Begin

All residential students will receive an email shortly. It will offer those interested a link to an online form for early check-out from university housing. Click the link to begin the process of checking out of university housing.

We appreciate your cooperation as we work to respond to this unprecedented situation in a manner that is fair and respects all members of our community.

Sincerely,
C. Mauli Agrawal
