Congratulations Lauren and Deijhah!
This past weekend, Brebeuf junior, Lauryn Alexandria Ezell, was crowned 2017 Queen of the Debutante Cotillion and Scholarship Program. The program was developed for young ladies who are juniors and seniors in high school in order to equip and encourage them to pursue higher education, academic excellence and community involvement. As queen, “Alex” will receive a scholarship to the college of her choice and will represent the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. at community events and participate in the Circle City Classic Parade next year.
Also participating was Brebeuf senior, Deijhah Scurry. She was presented with the “Book Award,” which is given annually to the student-participant who bests demonstrates proficiency in writing and academic excellence. Deijhah’s honor also includes a scholarship that can be used at the school of her choosing.
Fellow Brebeuf students Simon Banks, David House, Max Siegel served as escorts at the event.
Please be sure to congratulate Alex, Deijhah and the all the participants. Great job!

Student Spotlight

CHRIS DOEHRING '18

Loves About Brebeuf
I love the relationship that students are able to have with their teachers.  It is awesome to get to know them on a personal level by going to see them in their offices.  I have a very casual relationship with many of my teachers and I see them as friends as well as teachers.  Brebeuf gives students that unique opportunity.
Favorite Class
My favorite classes from last year were Microeconomics with Mr. VanSlambrook and Environmental Science with Ms. Miller.  This year, I have really enjoyed Calculus BC with Mr. Elliott and Entrepreneurship with Mr. VanSlambrook.
Future Plans
Next year, I will be attending college and studying business, math, or financial engineering.  I do not yet know where I will go but some of my favorite schools are Princeton University, University of Alabama, and Southern Methodist University.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
Ultimate Frisbee
YoungLife

Random Fact(s)
I have sat in a hot tub with Conan O’Brien multiple times.  Apparently Conan and my family have a similar taste in ski vacations because we have stayed at the same hotel in Utah over New Years two or three times.  After a long day of skiing, I often go sit in the hot tub and Conan sometimes comes to relax as well.  He is very friendly and his hair is much taller after skiing than it is on TV.
What is your current favorite show or series on tv, Netflix, etc?
I love The Office.  I have yet to find any show that can match its humor and wit.  If you ever spend any time with me, you will hear a copious amount of Office references.
If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go and why?
I would go to Florence, Italy.  I went to Italy in middle school and loved Florence.  It is a beautiful city and I love the intersection of so many different time periods in its art and architecture.  You can see things from the Roman Empire, the Renaissance, and the Middle Ages, all in one block and the way it flows together is amazing.
What are your plans for Thanksgiving?
For Thanksgiving every year, we have 20 Doehrings over to our house and it is amazing.  My uncle built his own turkey deep fryer and he always deep fries the turkey in our front yard.  For those of you who have never tried it, deep fried turkey is the best thing ever and I would highly recommend it.  I have 3 guy cousins all within a year of me so I always love hanging out with them.  Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and we go hard every single year.  It is the perfect combination of food, family, and fun.
What advice would you offer our Braves in the Class of 2021?
I would tell them to get to know their teachers.  This is probably the most cliched thing ever but I can’t stress it enough.  The opportunity for students to have personal relationships with their teachers is what makes Brebeuf special and you should take advantage.  Some of my best mentors have been teachers and if you have some personal relationships with your teachers, it can really help make for some good anecdotes on college rec letters.

Congratulations to Charlie Dapp, Sophia Ferries-Rowe, Amol Kular, and Hank Riegner, who have been named “Rising Stars of Indiana” based on their academic achievement. This program, administered by the Indiana Association of School Principals, aims to increase visibility and scholarship opportunities through early identification of up to four juniors per high school.
Pre-ACT Reminder: All sophomores will take the PreACT on Friday morning, November 17, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Students with extended time testing will be in the France Stone Room and should pack a lunch. Standard timed testing will take place in the Efroymson Auditorium. All students will return to class for Period 5 (day 2).

The FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid - is the form all colleges ask students to file to determine what kind of financial assistance a student might be eligible for. The FAFSA opened on October 1 at www.fafsa.gov and should be completed as soon as possible.  Families can start the process now by creating a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID - one for the student and one for a parent - at www.fafsa.gov. Hire Determined Students to Finish Your Chores, Work Events, and Much More!

Hyred is a student-founded company in the Brebeuf Jesuit community that connects households needing by-the-hour help to high school students looking to work their own hours.

Dozens of students from the Brebeuf student body have joined Hyred and are being employed around the greater Brebeuf area.

Brebeuf Students and Hyred would love to help you out with your chores and odd jobs! Simply submit a job on our website through the Book Workers Tab!

Students, if you would like to become a Hyred worker, check out our website here and follow the instructions on the Become a Worker Tab.

Hyred Story

The Hyred story began a few years ago when seniors Will King and Henry Goldenberg constructed an idea alongside Brebeuf alumni Ben King '14 and John Schmidt '14.

For multiple summers we spent our free time working odd jobs such as painting decks, power washing, moving furniture, and other miscellaneous tasks.

From these experiences the concept of a student based workforce was born: Hyred.

Since the conception of Hyred, we have provided job opportunities to many high school and college students looking to make extra cash.

Hyred has given members of our community an affordable and convenient option to complete everyday tasks.

Brebeuf Jesuit Students Attend 4th Annual Indiana Latino Education Summit

Brebeuf Jesuit students attended the 4th annual Indiana Latino Education Summit at the JW Marriott Hotel last week. The event provided Indiana Latino high school students with valuable information on the college process. Attendees received a riveting and entertaining keynote address from entrepreneur and youth development expert Carlos Ojeda Jr., who shared his story of perseverance and focus. Students then attended breakout sessions where higher education professionals equipped them with knowledge and skills needed to confidently approach the college process. This was the first year of Brebeuf’s participation in the event and we all look forward to returning. Let’s celebrate and congratulate these students.
