Valparaiso University
center for INNOVATION in teaching, assessment, and learning

february 11, 2025
Dear Colleagues,
As we approach Spring, it is an exciting time for CITAL and Valpo. This time of year is about new beginnings and we are happy that the transition to Canvas, our new Learning Management System (LMS), has been going well. With any large implementation, there are things you learn, both positive and challenging. We wanted to highlight some of what is new in this edition of our newsletter. First, we share a story of how Christ College used Canvas Commons and Simple Syllabus to better coordinate the first-year program for their students. Next, we introduce you to our new originality reporting system, Turnitin, and provide information on how you can access this directly (it is also integrated with Canvas). Next, we turn our attention to the upcoming installment in Valpo's Faculty AI workshop series. Finally, we end with a few reminders about faculty development opportunities and technology resources. As always, thank you for your engagement and support.
Sincerely,
The CITAL Team (Ed, Gina, and Cindy)

Christ College’s First Year Program

Transitions to Canvas

Sam Graber, Director of Christ College’s First-Year Program, oversaw the program’s move from Blackboard to Canvas this past fall.  This article, based on an interview, describes that transition, and how Canvas is working for the program.

Accessing Turnitin

Turnitin is embedded in Canvas and can be used much like Safe Assign in Blackboard. Did you know that you can also access Turnitin directly and upload documents manually? All you need to do is go to https://valparaiso.turnitin.com/ and sign in using your Valpo Google credentials. It's that easy.

QM Success Story Series:
Helping Learners Connect

Here is a webinar about providing meaningful feedback to your online students: “Incorporating Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) into Course Design and Delivery.” The webinar recording (60 m) is now available.
During the webinar, presenter Jennifer Davis shared what Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) is and why it’s a critical component of quality online course design and delivery practices. As she explains, RSI isn’t just a requirement; it’s a powerful tool for helping students get more out of their courses and their instructor’s expertise. She discusses how QM Standards support the implementation of RSI, what counts as RSI, and how to incorporate it meaningfully into your online courses.

You can find out if your online or hybrid course is QM-certifiable by
comparing your course design to the QM Rubric standards and conducting a
QM confidential unofficial self-review.
