Paloma's areas of expertise are energy efficiency, urban sustainability, and housing equity. Her previous research looked at the benefits and challenges of implementing energy efficiency policies in affordable housing in Mexico. Her current research evaluates the costs and benefits of retrofitting older multi-family buildings in Los Angeles to address ongoing heat stress in the city and reduce the need for additional air conditioning, with the overarching objective of improving quality of life and reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Dr. Giottonini earned her doctorate in Urban Planning from the University of California Los Angeles. She holds a master’s degree in Urban and Environmental Planning from Arizona State University, and a degree in Architecture from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM, Mexico).
Teaching Tip: “Take a class somewhere else and observe your teacher... Getting into the 'student perspective' you may identify a few things you can improve in your own teaching.”
