We often describe the Fulbright Award—the US's flagship international academic exchange program—as the sort of Waffle House of awards; it's always open, and there's always something interesting happening. February stands alone, however, in the variety of Fulbright activities, the time when there is action across three different cycles of the award. February is when we launch the process for our next group of applicants—the bright, enterprising students who want to learn about the award and consider their own interest in fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding. For the current group of applicants, who applied in October, February is often when they learn whether they've been named a semi-finalist, the first major threshold they must cross before they are named a winner. And for the last group of applicants, many of whom are abroad on their Fulbright grant right now, February is when we learn where Baylor stacked up nationally and whether we were a Top Producer.
Good news on each front, friends! For all our future Fulbrighters, you'll find information below about the various information sessions on offer this month to help you explore the Fulbright. For our current applicants, we have an astounding 35 semi-finalists, 56% of those who applied! And for our last group of applicants, the news was perhaps best of all: our 24 winners placed Baylor in the top 10 nationally, far and away Baylor's strongest-ever showing. As good as that news is, friends, I offered a bit of the following in a LinkedIn post last week: at Baylor, the Fulbright has never been, nor will it ever be, about a ranking. Supporting these bright young people as they seek to employ their good gifts in service of the world, as they set their aspirations toward an ambitious horizon, as they venture to do something hard precisely because it is the kind of hard "something" the world needs from them in times like these—that is a something a ranking would never, could never, capture. It's a sacred pedagogy, really, and a privilege for the OEL to take part in.
So please, friends, join us in celebrating a Happy Fulbright February! And enjoy learning about all sorts of other great opportunities, Fulbright and otherwise, below!
Cheers,
