Burglary Suspect Caught in Ken-Caryl Valley Thanks to Observant Resident

On Saturday, a man came home and surprised a burglar in his home on Willowleaf Dr. in Ken-Caryl Valley. The burglar was armed with a knife and fled the scene. The resident was not injured. A CodeRED alert was launched for the immediate area asking residents to stay inside and lock their doors. Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect. On Sunday morning, North Ranch resident Marcus McCloud spotted the suspect while running along Valley Parkway. McCloud managed to talk to the suspect, Steven Minchey, and keep him in place while another resident called 911. Deputies arrived and arrested the suspect. Minchey is homeless and was camping nearby. He was booked into the Jeffco jail for suspicion of 1st degree burglary and felony menacing. Huge thanks to Marcus McCloud for being observant and playing a pivotal role in Minchey’s arrest. Residents are encouraged to sign up for CodeRED alerts, which allow Jefferson County to call citizens to warn of danger such as inclement weather or criminal activity. See the CodeRED page on the Sheriff’s website for more information and to sign up.

Residents Needed for Firewise Committee

Wildfires in Colorado pose threats to even urban communities. Educational efforts and action plans that lead to immediate improvements can occur through adoption of the Firewise Communities program. Long-term efforts to become a Firewise Adapted Community will help address the many needs associated with living in the wildland-urban interface. Ken-Caryl residents who want to learn more and become involved with a community Firewise Committee that will start working on these issues in fall 2015 can contact the Ken-Caryl Ranch Open Space office at 303-979-1876, ext. 170. Homeowners that border open space areas can work with the KCR Park Rangers to reduce natural fuels through mowing up to 4 feet in width along their property lines. These adjacent homeowners who want to determine what they can do to address wildfire hazards on their own properties can contact the Colorado State Forest Service at 303-279-9757 for an assessment and report.

Dead Tree Removal in Parks and Greenbelts

Weather conditions recently have caused hardship to many trees on Ken-Caryl Ranch resulting in an unusually high number of dead trees. This spring the Master Association sent out a number of letters to residents who have dead trees. We appreciate those of you who have acted quickly and removed or scheduled the removal of your dead tree. In response to receiving a letter, several homeowners have expressed concern about dead trees in greenbelts and parks. The Ken-Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District is responsible for the maintenance and removal of trees in these areas. The District Forestry Technician and his assistant are somewhere on Ken-Caryl Ranch on a daily basis removing dead and dying trees. The combination of the age of many of the trees and the weather conditions over the past several years has created a large backlog of trees that either need to be trimmed or completely removed. The District has prioritized the most egregious of the dead and dying trees with the highest priority for attention being those trees that are considered hazardous to humans and property.
