Dear Faculty, Administrators and Staff,
We are delighted to share important information regarding the 2024-2025 sabbatical application process. Sabbaticals provide dedicated time to deepen one’s scholarly work, and we encourage you to consider applying.
Sabbatical applications should be submitted through Faculty Success (formerly Digital Measures). Please ensure that you demonstrate your eligibility under the relevant Faculty Guide, as it is the faculty member’s responsibility. Faculty must:
-
provide a report at the end of their sabbatical,
- include a copy of the previous sabbatical report for any sabbatical after the first,
- formally accept the sabbatical in writing after it is granted, with the commitment to remain employed at Seton Hall for at least a year after returning from sabbatical.
Please note that sabbaticals are granted for the specific year applied and deferral of an awarded sabbatical requires additional approval. The number of sabbaticals awarded each year depends on the University's financial situation and resources, though the primary criteria will continue to be the relative scholarly merit and impact of the project. Faculty should carefully consider whether a one-semester or a full-year sabbatical best suit your project’s needs, as the merits of the project will be evaluated in relation to its proposed duration. Once granted and accepted, faculty members will be expected to complete the sabbatical as approved.
Please note the important deadlines below:
- August 12, 2024: Sabbatical Application Acknowledgment
Submit this form to indicate that you anticipate submitting a Sabbatical Application. Based on the information provided, you will be sent the link to the application in Faculty Success. If you have questions regarding this form, please contact Ania Calka in the Office of the Provost (anna.calka@shu.edu). Workflow will be launched on or before August 26, 2024.
- October 1, 2024: Applications are due to the Department
The deadline for submitting the application to the school or department for a sabbatical is October 1 of the year preceding the academic year in which the leave is to be taken. Please refer to your Faculty Guide for the criteria for eligibility. A detailed description of sabbatical plans and projects should be uploaded to Faculty Success. -
At the completion of a sabbatical: The faculty member must submit a sabbatical report to: (1) the department, (2) the Dean of the College/School; and (3) the Provost via Faculty Success. If the sabbatical ends in the fall semester, the sabbatical report is due by the first day of class for the upcoming spring semester; if it ends in the spring semester, the report is due by the first day of class for the upcoming fall semester. A sabbatical is considered a serious investment on the part of all concerned, so faculty are encouraged to prepare a detailed report in a professional style, suitable for presentation to internal and external audiences.

Faculty Research Spotlight:
Sharon Ince, Ph.D., University Libraries
Sharon Ince 's research has focused on the research practices of doctoral students who are not at R1 universities. As such, her work has directly impacted how the University Libraries support and mentor our graduate students, and how we work with the schools and colleges at Seton Hall to support them in their recruiting, teaching and mentoring of successful graduate students.
