Precision Genomics
Two additional Genome Academy (formerly GCB Academy) courses have been announced. See below for information and registration. Contact Matthew Franco with any questions.
Blood, Sweat, and Tears: Proteomics of Biofluids and Secretomes
Instructor: Matthew Foster, Ph.D.
Date and Time: April 9, 1:00pm-3:30pm
Location: CIEMAS 2240
Cost: Free
Register
Biofluids, including plasma, urine and cerebrospinal fluid are among the most common sample types utilized for protein biomarker discovery. Similarly, proteins secreted by cells or organoids in vitro can be used to identify signaling factors or response to injury. The proteomic analysis of these samples by can be challenged by pre-analytic variability and by the extreme range of protein concentrations. This workshop will focus on best practices for sample collection and storage, experimental design, sample preparation, and data acquisition and analysis as they relate to the targeted and non-targeted mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis of biofluids and secretomes. Limitations of mass spectrometry-based versus other approaches (e.g. antibody-based assays) will also be discussed.
Introduction to Mass Spectrometry-Based Proteomics
Instructor: Erik Soderblom, Ph.D.
Date and Time: May 13, 9:00am-12:00pm
Location: Reuben-Cooke 133
Cost: Free
Register
Liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) continues to be the key technology for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of peptides and proteins for both basic and clinical research projects. This Genome Academy session is designed as an introduction for researchers needing to expand their knowledge of the use of LC/MS/MS-based methods for proteomics, and thus help researchers better understand how these technologies can help inform their research goals. Background material in basic protein chemistries will be provided, with an emphasis on how to use the physicochemical characteristics of these biomolecules for sample preparation specifically for LC/MS/MS analyses. In addition, the fundamentals of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry will be discussed to enable students to understand the nuances of the experimental designs required to address their specific project. Real-world examples will be used to illustrate sample preparation and analysis strategies, including basic identification projects, characterization of Post-Translational Modifications and differential expression analyses (including 'omic biomarker discovery and targeted biomarker verification). Finally, the use of open source software tools for interpretation of these datasets will be discussed.

NIH Well-Being Resources
The goal of the NIH OITE Mental Health & Wellbeing of Biomedical Researchers Series is to have an open and honest dialogue focused on mental health and well-being to decrease stigma and explore new tools to support ourselves and others in the biomedical research community. The series is open to all trainees, fellows, and staff at NIH and elsewhere who wish to join this important conversation. The 2024 series comprises four webinars followed by Q&A sessions.
1. Burnout in Biomedical Researchers
WHEN: Weds Mar 27, 4 – 5:15 pm
Register for this session
Burnout, often experienced as exhaustion, detachment, and ineffectiveness, can have significant impacts on work, mental health, and overall well-being. This lecture and conversation will discuss risk factors that can lead to burnout especially in biomedical researchers, protective factors associated with prevention, and ways to manage symptoms of burnout.
2. Healthy Rest as a Steppingstone to Productivity and Well-being
WHEN: Weds Apr 24, 4 – 5:15 pm
Register for this session
Healthy rest is key to effectiveness at work and overall mental and physical health. However, many researchers find it challenging to incorporate it as a regular practice. This lecture and conversation will define what constitutes healthy rest, explore its benefits, discuss impediments to practice healthy rest, and offer ways to intentionally include rest into one’s lifestyle.
3. The Epidemic of Loneliness
WHEN: Weds May 22, 4 – 5:15 pm
Register for this session
Loneliness, often experienced as distress in response to discrepancies between desired and actual social relationships or lack thereof, is becoming a growing public concern. Research shows that loneliness is associated with negative mental and physical health outcomes across the lifespan. This lecture and conversation will explore risk factors including those that may be unique to the culture of the biomedical research community and ways to reduce loneliness at both the individual and community level.
4. Supporting Each Other in Being Well
WHEN: Weds June 26, 4 – 5:15 pm
Register for this session
Fostering a community approach to supporting mental health and well-being helps everyone thrive. Often, there are questions as to how to respond to colleagues who may be facing mental health challenges and/or life stressors. This panel and discussion will help participants identify, understand, and respond to signs that colleagues may be struggling in order to support each other’s well-being.
