National Forest Week

National Forest Week
In honour of National Forest Week (Sept 21-27), we hosted a Walk in the Woods where Garden volunteer Laura Cottle designed a fun and interactive tour of important trees in the Garden. Over 50 guests participated in the event where adults and children learned first hand about grand firs, Douglas firs, cedar, hemlock and aspen. Guests experiences the forest floor then took the canopy to explore the tree tops. The tour will also be offered to school groups throughout this year.  Many thanks to Laura and all the other volunteers that made this event possible!

Blog
October in the Botanical Garden
While this year's autumn colours will no doubt be worth admiring, because of the hot, dry summer, most leaves are exhibiting sign of stress, and the show may be somewhat abbreviated. The focus this year should be on fruit, since this will clearly be a banner year.  Everything from crabapples, cotoneasters and quinces to sapphire berries (sadly, already picked clean by birds), sparkleberries and sumac bobs are incredibly abundant this year. Some would have us believe such abundance presages an extra cold winter, but it's more easily explained by the nearly perfect conditions that occurred during and immediately following flowering earlier this year. We have plenty to brag about in Vancouver, but the combination of warm springtime temperatures, sunny conditions and well-spaced rain events is not usually one of them.

Shop in the Garden
Shop in the Garden and Garden Centre
As your garden winds down, fill the open spaces with bulbs from The Shop in the Garden. There are bargains to be found amongst the treasures in The Garden Centre as we prepare for winter.
The cooler weather steers our selection of hats towards a warmer, softer, cozier array of felt beauties to protect and adorn your head. Add a layer of warmth to your shoulders with a wool scarf from our ever-changing offering from Tuula Vishdehi at  Kemi Trading. Finish up with a pair of three-way gloves from Picabo. Beautiful new lampwork beads from Vancouverite, Minori Takagi will add a crisp sparkle to your neck. In from the garden, freshen-up with a bar of Lakewood Lye handmade soap, locally made in a dozen botanical combinations. After a day of exertion in the cold, you may enjoy a ‘Warm Buddy,’ a new line of heating pads that are heated in the microwave with optional aroma-therapy, made in North Vancouver. ‘Warm Buddy’ teddy bears are available for your wee garden helpers. Christmas is way around the corner, but we do have seasonal stationery and gifts arriving for your furthest friends.

Garden Outreach
Garden Outreach in September

Garden staff and volunteers have been working hard to engage our local community in getting people to come to the Garden. In September, we kicked off our outreach at the UBC Staff BBQ, we then hosted a Ripple Lab promoting the Garden’s work on sustainability to students and we had fun in the sun at campus community events such as the UNA Annual Barn Raising and the Wesbrook Village Festival.
