Fords in Four:
Michael Scott '77
Advertising executive, artist

1. What piqued your interest in art?
Growing up I had no idea what it meant to be an artist, but I had an inherent interest in not only looking at art but also making it. I think for most artists, regardless of the form the expression takes (writing, painting, acting), it is something you are born with and it is inherent in your identity. It was through a teacher in college that I began to understand the complexity of art and that it was not just about making aesthetically pleasing things. That teacher had a profound impact on me, so much so that by the Thanksgiving break of my freshman year I had announced to my parents that I was determined to be an artist.

2. Recount a favorite experience at one of your art exhibitions.
My favorite exhibitions are solo exhibitions because they allow for an opportunity to create a context for one’s work and provide broader insight. One of my most memorable shows was an early exhibition at the Tony Shafrazi gallery in 1989. Tony was one of the top art dealers in the world. He represented artists such as Keith Haring and Jean Michael Basquiat. Tony saw my work at a small exhibition and decided to give me a chance. He provided me the means to rent a large studio, buy materials, and quit my day job. I worked six days a week for four months preparing for the show. The show sold out before it opened to the public and I received a tremendous amount of attention for this exhibition. Needless to say, it was an exciting time for me.

3. Note a memorable Haverford moment or faculty member.
Haverford has great teachers. I enjoyed the English department the most. Mr. Hallowell, Dr. Peck and Mr. Jameson (who also taught my father) all instilled in me a love for the classics and poetry. I began to understand that art, literature, theater, and poetry provide unique means of understanding and expressing the human condition. I have not met anyone who studied poetry or literature to the extent that we were taught it at Haverford. I hope this tradition continues because it has enriched my life tremendously.

4. What don't most people know about you?
I am red/green colorblind. I did not realize this until I was 20. This doesn’t mean I don’t see color, just that I see some colors differently than the majority of people. Most of my color paintings are driven by tonal relationships. I think this may be why I am drawn to graphic work and may be why I primarily paint in only black and white.
