The Stearns Center will host two AI Test Kitchens in February. These are opportunities to try different AI prompts to test your AI literacy skills and discuss with other faculty how AI is an important consideration in teaching, how to incorporate AI literacy in your teaching, and how creativity may or may not evolve using AI.

The CPH Steps Challenge walks again beginning this week, Monday, January 20 (MLK Day) – Sunday, January 26. The Spring Challenge features a new reporting deadline of midnight on Mondays (previously noon), giving walkers more time to submit their weekly totals.
All CPH employees can join in.This includes adjuncts, GRAs, and wage staff. Participants may walk anywhere, anytime, within the weekly time frames, counting their steps, and then report their CPH unit affiliation along with the steps they’ve walked on the following Monday.
At the end of the semester, the unit with the most steps (proportionally) will be awarded a prize and take the trophy!

Solutions for Healthy Communities (SHC) is Merck’s global grants program designed to improve access to healthcare for underserved communities through innovative, community-led solutions. Grantees serve those living in poverty, in underrepresented ethnic groups, who have diverse gender identities and/or sexual orientations, or who are displaced by humanitarian crises or conflicts. The California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) has created a $1 million fund for researchers interested in using California’s new Healthcare Payments Database (HPD) to study consumer affordability challenges and system-wide cost drivers in the state. CHCF welcomes applications from a broad group of researchers, including those who are early in their careers, who self-identify with a demographic group currently underrepresented in health services research, and who are interested in studying healthcare affordability challenges among historically disadvantaged groups. More information available here. Proposals are due February 14.

New commentary on social determinants of health research |
This recent commentary published in JAMA Internal Medicine and co-authored by three directors within NIH, including OBSSR Director Jane M. Simoni, PhD, emphasizes the urgent need to expand research on social determinants of health (SDoH) to address disparities and improve population health outcomes. It encourages fuller integration of SDoH into research studies to develop holistic and impactful solutions while highlighting NIH’s commitment to advancing SDoH research and outlines ongoing initiatives.
