Dear Friends of the Center for Arab American Studies,

Welcome to the new and very busy academic year.

I am happy to announce that we have two new faculty members to welcome to campus. Dr. Wessam Elmeligi will head up our Arabic language program and is eager to introduce new courses and internships that promote career opportunities in translation. And Rebecca Karam joined us this past summer as a lecturer offering our Introduction to Arab American Studies class. Rebecca is one of the first students to have taken Arab American Studies classes in CASL, so we are very eager to see her defend her dissertation in sociology from CUNY Graduate Center this winter and to have her teaching for us again this fall. Please introduce yourself to both of them if you see them on campus.

The Halal Metropolis exhibition opens this evening in Hamtramck at Bank Suey at 6 p.m. Please join us for a party that will be filled with surprising connections to local history and culture. This event kicks off a September programming calendar that is quite remarkable, if we do say so ourselves, and we plan to keep up this pace all year.

Please join us as well for our Fall Open House on Oct. 2 to learn about the progress of our EHRA team over the summer, of our Yemenis on the Great Lakes project, and of the Unsettled Lives exhibition. We were busy when the campus was (relatively) quiet!
