Dear Partner in Ministry,

When it comes to Palm Sunday, I like Mark the best. The Gospel of Mark keeps to the classic version of Jesus’ celebrated entry into Jerusalem. Mark has Jesus riding on a colt (not a colt and a donkey as Matthew perplexingly reports). There is a big crowd that welcomes Jesus into the great city (Luke says it's just “his disciples”). The crowd waves palms and lays their coats down to cover the dusty road (Luke has coats but no palms - a major miss!). John, playing to type, has his own unique take on the whole episode. Each gospel writer shapes the story to emphasize theological themes in their respective narrative. Yes, they are also pulling from different traditions (maybe nobody actually brought palms to the part of the parade that Luke or his sources witnessed), but often editorial choices can point to larger literary trajectories.

This all has got me thinking about themes and theological “through lines.” As we move from Lenten preparation to Palm Sunday celebration and then Holy Week reflection, what are the themes that resonate with you? Where do you find meaning in these stories? Where do they intersect with themes in your own life? Is it in Jesus’ faithfulness despite the dark days to come? Do you relate to the crowds whose attempts at discipleship inevitably fall short? Are you really ready to wave those palms and experience communal joy? Whatever they are, may the stories of Holy Week and Easter meet you, guide you, and even redirect you to new understanding and new life this next week and in all your weeks to come.
