Celebrating Diversity & Inclusion The sweeping views of Manhattan’s skyline at dusk only added to the joyful atmosphere as 360 alumni, students, faculty, administrators, and guests gathered recently in celebration and community at the Law School's 2022 Diversity & Inclusion Gala. The evening's honoree was New York State Attorney General Letitia James, who received the Law School's Diversity Champion Award and delivered remarks. Read on.
Announcing Our 2022 Commencement Speaker New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks will be the Law School's commencement speaker on Sunday, 5/22. The commencement exercises will take place on St. John's Queens campus. Read the full announcement.
Exploring the History and Legacy of Lynching in America Students in Lynching: Legal & Dispute Resolution Responses to Violence, a seminar co-taught by Professor Elayne E. Greenberg and Professor Cheryl L. Wade, examine the history and causes of lynching in the U.S. between 1861 and 1950 and analyze how the vestiges of that domestic terrorism continue today in the criminal justice system. Advancing Dispute Resolution University of Oregon School of Law Professor Michael Moffitt received the Hugh L. Carey Center's 2022 Dispute Resolution Advancement Award (DRAA) for the research he reported in his University of Chicago Law Review article, “Settlement Malpractice." Professor Moffitt discussed his winning scholarship at a virtual award ceremony on Monday. Read all about the 2022 DRAA.

In Memoriam Longtime St. John's Law Alumni Association board member Hon. Joseph Sullivan '57 has passed away. A great public servant, he was a Corporal in the U.S. Army's 11th Airborne Division during the Korean War and presided in New York's Appellate Division, First Department for more than 30 years, making him the state's longest serving appellate justice. May he rest in peace.

Scholarly Insights "Today, as the world watches and responds to Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, it should recall particulars of Nazi crimes in Ukraine that were charged in that 1945 indictment—what we call the Nuremberg indictment," writes Professor John Q. Barrett in his compelling commentary for the New York Law Journal.
Over at The Volokh Conspiracy, Professor Mark Movsesian offers Some thoughts on the role of tradition in the recent pastor-in-the-execution-chamber case, and more generally in SCOTUS' religious freedom decisions. Professor Movsesian co-directs the Law School's Center for Law and Religion with Professor Marc DeGirolami. Together they produce the Law and Religion Forum blog and the Legal Spirits podcast.
In the News Professor Robin Boyle gave five presentations recently on Human Trafficking and Coercion. She was a keynote speaker at an academic conference hosted by China's Shanxi University and spoke to community members at Hicksville High School, the National Charity League, the Garden City Community Church, and St. John's Law. The Mid-Island Times featured Professor Boyle's Hicksville High talk in this story.

May It Please the Court David Aminov '22 and Stephanie Algarín-Santiago '22 bested an impressive field to finish as champions of the Elaine Jackson Stack Moot Court Competition hosted by the Nassau County Bar Association. David also took home the win for Best Oralist.
Christa Alexander '23 and Sarah Hautzinger '23 finished as semifinalists in the Wechsler National Criminal Moot Court Competition hosted by Buffalo Law. They also tied for Top Oralist honors and received an award for Fourth Best Brief.
At Brooklyn Law's Jerome Prince Memorial Evidence Competition, Raul Muniz '22 and Olivia Visconti '22 went undefeated in their preliminary rounds and finished as semifinalists.
The trio of 2Ls Patrick Caldarelli, Aron Kaplan, and Megan O'Connor competed in Fordham Law's Irving R. Kaufman Memorial Securities Law Moot Court Competition, going 3-0 in the preliminary rounds and advancing to the semifinals.
Alexa Schimp '23 and Connor Winship ’22 finished as semifinalists in Cardozo Law’s BMI Entertainment and Media Law Moot Court Competition, with Alexa earning Best Oralist of the competition.
Representing the Law School’s Frank S. Polestino Trial Advocacy Institute, Michael Allain '23, Patrick Clancey '23, Christine Raso '23, and Brendan Tighe '23 teamed to advance to the semifinals of the Queens County District Attorney's Office Mock Trial Competition. Raso also earned the Best Closing award.
LALSA Students Uplift Queens' Latino Community On a recent Saturday, Entre Panas Radio is broadcasting live, in Spanish, to some 2,287,390 people who call Queens, NY home. In the studio are five students from St. John's Latin American Law Student Association, who take the mic to present a two-hour program about tenants' rights. Read their story.
Princess Hanson '24 Volunteers to Help veterans in Need In the law school universe, no one needs a little time off in March more than 1Ls. But when Princess Hanson heard about the Public Interest Center's Spring Break Service Program, she jumped at the opportunity to spend a week advocating for U.S. military veterans through The Veterans Consortium.
