Waitlist Surpasses 60 Students Waiting to Be Matched with a Tutor

Our student waitlist reached an all-time high last month with over 60 students waiting to be matched with a volunteer tutor. While many of our current tutors stepped up to take on an extra student, we still have many students waiting to be matched. If we're unable to meet the need, we will need to pause registering new students until we can fully catch up.
You can help us by spreading the word about upcoming trainings:
  • Tuesday, February 11 & Wednesday, February 12, 5:30–8:30 p.m. -- volunteers must attend both evenings to complete training
  • Saturday, March 7, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 25, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Prospective volunteers can register for training by calling our office at 434-977-3838, or by emailing info@literacyforall.org

Student Book Group To Read MLK Biography for Black History Month

This month, our student Book Group will begin reading, I Have a Dream: The Life of Martin Luther King, Jr. in honor of Black History Month.
The book group, which consists of a small group of students who read at an intermediate level, are guided through readings by Sara, a  volunteer tutor. They read chapters on their own at home, then meet weekly with Sara to discuss what they've read.
We are lucky to have volunteers like Sara who not only help teach our students how to read and think critically, but also help them understand our culture and history. Thanks, Sara!

New First Aid/CPR Certification Class for English Learners Starts in March

After a successful first round last fall, we have decided to offer a second session of a First Aid/CPR Certification class to English Language Learners. Students spend three weeks with a volunteer instructor learning First Aid/CPR terminology and English literacy before being evaluated by an instructor with the American Red Cross. Last fall, each student who enrolled, successfully obtained their certification at the end of the course.
The new course will begin in March and will provide students with more complete knowledge of emergency response and healthcare-related vocabulary. We see the First Aid/CPR course as the first step for someone who may be interested in pursuing a healthcare career.
"These stepping stone classes and experiences are important because they introduce a learner to the field and the vocabulary they will need to understand in that field," said Executive Director Ellen Osborne. "It also gives students the opportunity to see if they might be interested in pursuing a career in that area."

Census 2020: Everyone Counts

LVCA has joined other regional service organizations in a Complete Count Committee with the U.S. Census Bureau. Together, we are working to educate our community about the importance of the census and how it can be completed.
We believe that if we can provide accurate information about the census we can help ease any fears our student population may face about completing it.
A representative from the Census Bureau has attended two of our citizenship classes and a conversation class to provide crucial information about this year's census.
We look forward to hosting Kathy O'Connell, Partnership Specialist with the U.S. Census Bureau, this month in a workshop for both students and tutors. Kathy will explain why the census is so important, what resources are available to promote census participation, and how they can help ensure a complete count for our community.
