Dear Faculty, Administrators and Staff,
One of the key commitments of our strategic plan is strengthening faculty-student engagement by prioritizing mentorship, collaboration and personal growth in the learning experience. In support of that commitment, I wanted to highlight a mechanism that connects students with high-impact advising and competitive national programs.
Professor Matthew Escobar, our Director of Student Prestigious Fellowships, supports students in identifying and applying for external fellowship opportunities. These fellowships offer a range of benefits, including:
-
Specialized Training: Fellowships provide specialized training, mentorship and access to unique resources.
- Professional Skill-Building: Fellowships advance students’ professional skills and help create a strong network.
- Earn Recognition: Being selected for a prestigious fellowship is a significant achievement that demonstrates exceptional talent and potential.
The best applicants are high-achieving and driven undergraduate students (generally, 3.8 GPA and higher). The list of opportunities is broad, including graduate school, teaching English abroad or intensive foreign language learning, as well as other professional opportunities. Many fellowships offer financial assistance, covering tuition fees, research expenses, and sometimes a stipend or living allowance.
Please help us help students by letting them know that such opportunities exist and encourage them to contact the Director of Student Prestigious Fellowships, Matthew Escobar, at matthew.escobar@shu.edu for more information and application support.

Professor Shajina Anand Receives University Research Council Award
Shajina Anand, Ph.D., assistant professor at the College of Arts and Sciences, received a University Research Council award for her project titled “Next-Gen Cybersecurity: AI-Based Threat Detection and Live Monitoring.” The project strengthens cybersecurity by pairing AI-based anomaly detection with live, easy-to-read network visualizations. An LSTM model learns normal traffic patterns, flags suspicious deviations in real time, and triggers rapid alerts for security teams. By reducing false positives and improving detection of emerging threats such as zero-day exploits and insider attacks, this work supports faster, more reliable incident responses.
