Barbecue demand remains strong despite high meat prices
Beef brisket, the savory staple item served at Texas barbecue restaurants far and wide, continues to escalate in price, but consumers remain hungry and willing to pay up, according to experts.
Pitmasters from across Texas attending the seventh annual Texas Barbecue Town Hall Meeting in College Station said they are battling through the high prices and supply shortages to continue to make sure customers have options and get the best experience possible.

Planning ahead to feed problem newborn calves
While we all hope that every dam will claim her calf and provide it with what it needs to thrive, the reality is that some will not.
Hopefully, orphaned or problem calves are not a common or regular occurrence on your operation. Nonetheless, the unfortunate reality is that all operations will experience situations from time to time that require intervention to ensure that a newborn calf gets off to the right start. Maybe a first-calf heifer doesn’t claim her calf. Maybe the calf won’t nurse. Maybe it needs to be moved inside and separated from its dam so it doesn’t freeze. Whatever the reason, it is important to be prepared for such situations before they arise.

2022 Texas A&M Equine Reproductive Management Short Course
The Texas A&M Equine Reproductive Management Short Course has been an annual Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service event since its inception in the late 1970s. Breeders, owners and managers gather for three days to discuss breeding techniques and best management practices to improve efficiency and care. The challenges of 2021 led Chelsie Huseman, Ph.D., and Jennifer Zoller, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension horse specialists, to move the course to a virtual platform, resulting in a new on-demand online course housed at https://agrilifelearn.tamu.edu/s/.

State-renowned pit masters share journeys, experiences during panel at Camp Brisket
In Texas, the “Holy Trinity” of barbecue consists of brisket, pork ribs and sausage.
Individuals and restaurants can make the best ribs and sausage in the world, but only those who prepare good brisket are considered elite, said Jeff Savell, Ph.D., a professor at Texas A&M University and leader of the meat science section in the Department of Animal Science.

The graduating class of 2021 has had a college career filled with new experiences. For students in the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University, their education has not been defined by the pandemic, but rather by completing the comprehensive new curriculum launched in 2018, designed to prepare current students to enter and contribute to the animal science industry of today.

Ranch Horse Team
The Texas A&M Ranch Horse Team started off the new year with practice the first day of school. This is after many team members worked hard independently over the break to prepare for two new contests.
The team recently competed in the new Bridle and Braind contest at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. Each team presented a speech about their program and participated in a media interview. Additionally, the competitors completed four classes including ranch roping, ranch penning, ranch reining and ranch trail. The team consisted of Nicole Jones, Reagan Loxton, Saryn Paulsen and Haley Winkler. They placed second in media interview, fourth in public speaking and several members placed in the top 10 in their performance classes.
The next contest for the team will be the National Reined Cowhorse Association's Collegiate Invitational. Three team members will be traveling to Fort Worth later this month to represent Texas A&M. Emma Thrasher will be competing in the non-pro division, Sara Saxe in the limited division and Krisondra McMellian in boxing. One run will include a reining pattern followed by cow work.
Mark your calendars for our Second Annual Goat Roping on Apr. 23, at the Flying Ace Ranch.
