“It’s About Being Intentional”: New Podcast Episode Offers Tips and Strategies for Maximizing On-The-Job Learning
What makes high-quality internships and co-ops? Purpose, relationships, communication, and planning, say the guests on the GCCI’s recently released At the Center podcast, Powering Up Workplace Learning for Students. Recorded live at a community networking event on May 1, the episode features Dr. Rachael Lattanzio, YCP Assistant Professor of Nursing; Dr. Diana Muthami, WellSpan Professional Development Lead; Claire Rumsey, YCP Civil Engineering major; and Ethan Feaser, Finance major and Graham Fellow.
Speaking to potential employers, Muthami recommends that supervisors approach internships as opportunities to recruit and train future employees. Lattanzio adds the importance of placing students in the different roles they might have if employed by the company or organization and scaffolding their learning. Not only will they learn about the company, she says, but it allows them to “discover who they are and what they want to do with their careers.”
Drawing on his internship experiences, Feaser encourages students to look beyond what they can get out of the opportunity. “Think of [workplace learning] as a two-way relationship,” he offers, and describes how he helped his host company improve their data processes. Rumsey recommends the same approach when looking for an internship. “In networking, be intentional, not opportunistic,” she says. “Take that initiative to go and find someone you don’t know, who is either inside or outside of your field, and forge that relationship.” In the end, all recommended using available resources to share opportunities, like YCP Handshake, and for students to connect with career services to practice interviews and create high-quality resumes. York Review Showcases the Power of Student-Driven Work
In April, YCP members, local artists, and others from the York community celebrated the release of the 31st volume of The York Review, York College's student-run literary magazine. The annual publication weaves together writing and visual works from students across the college into a cohesive narrative. During the launch party, alumni and current students shared how their involvement in this student-run project positively impacted their YCP experience. The highlight of the evening, by all accounts, was the live-readings by several students included in this year’s issue.
