Scranton City Pride 2023 a great success!
During the week of June 2-10, groups of volunteers throughout the City of Scranton conducted cleanups and plantings for Scranton City Pride 2023, as part of National NeighborWorks Week. This event was organized jointly by NeighborWorks Northeastern PAScranton Tomorrow and United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania. This year, over 800 volunteers participated in projects all over the City!
We also debuted our first-annual West Scranton Garbage Olympics! We want to give a huge shoutout to all seven teams who participated this year for helping clean up West Side. Together, we made a difference with 38 volunteers, 91 volunteer hours, 70 bags of trash, and 1980 lbs of trash. Special thanks go to NEPA Junk Removal for picking up all the bags! Stay tuned for next year!

NEPA Alliance and NeighborWorks announce major West Scranton funding
We recently hosted a media event with Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance at Vincenzo's Pizzeria & Catering as part of our West Scranton Small Business Walk. The West Scranton Main Street Revitalization and Small Business Boost initiative aims to support small businesses in the West Scranton area, focusing on the Main Avenue and Luzerne Street commercial corridors.
The project is part of a 10-year neighborhood revitalization plan developed by NeighborWorks and recognized as an Elm Street community by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission is being used to provide a Neighborhood Coordinator, establish a business association, offer training and consultations through The University of Scranton Small Business Development Center, and implement various strategies such as community events and loyalty programs to assist local businesses.

NeighborWorks assists Congolese homebuyers during National Homeownership Month
At NeighborWorks, we believe that Home is where it all starts. June was National Homeownership Month, a time set aside to celebrate the accomplishment and joy of owning a home. In early 2022, we hosted several housing information workshops with the University of Scranton Office of Community Relatons for the Congolese community residing in Scranton. These informative sessions covered a wide range of topics regarding the homebuying process.

Bahulwe and Mwibe, who moved to the United States from the Republic of the Congo in 2017 with the hope of building a better life, had a dream of becoming homeowners. Their dream finally came true this month. Through the City of Scranton Homebuyer Program, they were awarded $20,000 towards downpayment and closing costs assistance for their new home.

We would like to express our gratitude to the City of Scranton, realtor Nick Browning from Christian Saunders Real Estate, lender Tim Holmes from My City Mortgage, closing agent Michael Holden from Golden Dome Abstract, translator Ushu Mukelo, and our HomeOwnership Specialist Kathi Tavera. Together, they formed an incredible team that made it possible for Bahulwe and Mwibe to lead the way in the Congolese community and become one of the first families to participate. Congratulations!

First-ever block captain orientation meetings held for Beautiful Blocks
Block captains, selection committee members and program staff for our Beautiful Blocks program in Scranton and Carbondale recently convened for orientation meetings. The meetings aimed to prepare participating block captains for their roles and responsibilities in the program. These resident leaders will offer guidance and support to their neighbors during exterior improvement projects in this year's Beautiful Blocks program. The orientation sessions fostered a productive exchange of ideas and information among new and returning block captains, resulting in valuable suggestions for enhancing future cycles of Beautiful Blocks.
