A message from the interim dean, Cody Edwards |
|
|
Halfway through our busy summer and we're experiencing another big change. As former George Mason University College of Science Dean, Fernando Miralles-Wilhelm begins his new role as president of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, the next chapter of our new college leadership begins.
Effective July 1, I am excited to assume the role of interim dean for the college I've been affiliated with since its beginning. I feel fortunate to have served on its leadership team as senior associate dean for faculty and academic affairs for the past three years as it's given me an excellent opportunity to become more familiar with our administrative systems, processes, strategies, and most importantly, to collaborate with many of the people who make up our science community.
To best lead our college through this transition period, a number of responsibilities will be shifting hands. Although we will discuss this in more detail during the State of the College address this fall, I wanted to share the high-level info in a timely manner as the transition occurs.
First, I will be working for our college from a variety of locations. Most of the time, you can find me in the dean's suite in Fairfax, VA. I will also continue my role overseeing the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation in Front Royal, and will maintain a regular presence on our Science and Technology Campus as well. I will be on the road attending many advancement-related activities, as President Washington and you all expect me to do.

George Mason researcher helps explain how a protein in our bodies helps the Rift Valley fever virus reproduce |
A recent peer-reviewed publication from School of Systems Biology associate professor Ramin Hakami's group in Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology demonstrated the mechanism by which the host chaperone protein HSP90 enables genome replication/transcription of the Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV). In a previous report, Hakami's group had demonstrated that HSP90 plays a critical role in regulating viral production.

Review the additional restrictions placed on Chinese institutions |
As of May 14, 2024, the U.S. Department of Commerce has added the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and the following institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to the Entity List:
(1) Center for Excellence in Quantum Information and Quantum Physics, (2) Institute of Physics, (3) Key Laboratory for Quantum Information, and (4) Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology.
Please note that the National Supercomputing Center Guangzhou (NSCC-GZ), which is associated with Sun Yat-sen University, is on the Entity List as well.
As a result, an export license is required for all items subject to the Commerce Department’s export regulations, which includes all commercial and dual-use technology (even items that would not normally require a license to be exported to China) if the technology will be shared with these institutes at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, USTC, or NSCC-GZ. The license review policy is a presumption of denial.
