Empowering South Bend youth through chess |
A pilot after-school chess program launched at Robinson Community Learning Center in the fall of 2023, offering South Bend students a chance to learn the game. By the spring, nearly 25 students were playing chess a few times a week. With the growing interest, Notre Dame first-year student Gaaya Binoj hosted the “Rockne’s Rooks: Scholastic Tournament” on April 20 with nearly 30 registered participants.

University collaborators honor local partners at Sustainability Celebration |
Nearly 200 students, faculty and staff from all corners of the University gathered for Notre Dame’s inaugural Sustainability Celebration to honor the collective achievements of campus sustainability champions and recognize external partners who are leaders in their respective fields. Local recipients included Pure Green Farms, Importin' Joe's Ethiopian Coffee, Crossroads Solar and Cultivate Food Rescue.

Campus salon adds South Bend stylist specializing in Black hair care
|
Yvette Wade, owner of Promise Hair Studio in South Bend, is a master stylist specializing in African American hair care and hairstyles. She recently joined the team of hairstylists at University Hair Stylists, a salon located in the lower level of LaFortune.

A winning combination: ND students partner with South Bend entrepreneurs
|
Through the McKenna Center’s South Bend Entrepreneurship and Adversity Program, Notre Dame sophomore Justin Hur worked with three South Bend entrepreneurs, creating websites, new business segments, product ideas and pricing strategies — an experience he found invaluable. Hur was awarded the Excellence in Social Entrepreneurship Award, and Maria Rodriguez Contreras, sophomore, received the Outstanding Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

'RESIST!' exhibit opens to public |
WNDU-TV produced a two-part series featuring a new exhibit at the St. Joe County Public Library that explores the pivotal 1920s clash between Notre Dame students and the KKK. The exhibit, "RESIST!," is presented by The History Museum, Notre Dame and the Indiana Historical Society, and will run through Oct. 13.
