Letter from the Chair
Welcome to another issue of the Integral! This year has brought many changes to our department.
We are pleased to welcome a new faculty member this fall- Faezeh Soleimani from the University of Texas at Arlington (Data Science and Applied Mathematics). We are also saying goodbye to four colleagues, Bart Frye, Jeff Hiatt, Ira Livshits, and Crystal Lorch. We appreciate all that each has done over the years--they will be missed!
In this issue, we are pleased to highlight a recent graduate:
- Irfan Hossain, MA in Statistics 2011, is a Senior Program Officer in the Population Council's Bangladesh Office. The Population Council conducts research to address critical health and development issues.
Please enjoy the departmental news, and as always, we love to hear from our alumni! Our faculty enjoy learning about what you have been up to since leaving Ball State-- I am sure our alumni would as well!
Sincerely,
Michael A. Karls

Ann Leitze
For just one student in North Dakota, Ann Leitze, professor of Mathematical Sciences and graduate advisor, began teaching online.
In the fall of 2009, she chose to admit the student and teach in a hybrid format, virtually to her online student and face-to-face to main-campus students. Her goal was to grow the online MA in mathematics education. Today, she routinely has 85-90 students enrolled online each semester in the MA’s three concentrations, two graduate certificates, and another MA. Read more

Elementary Mathematics Specialist
On May 5, 2021, the Indiana State Board of Education approved the following new licensure program proposal from Ball State University:
Elementary Mathematics Specialist (K-6)
Our Master of Arts in Mathematics Education (for elementary and middle school specialists) not only earns you a master’s degree but also provides you with the preparation to earn the Indiana Elementary Mathematics Specialist license. The state of Indiana—like most states—requires that applicants for the Indiana Elementary Mathematics Specialist license pass a mathematics specialist assessment administered by the state. If you are not an Indiana teacher, check with your local district and/or state to see if it will accept the Indiana Elementary Mathematics Specialist license.
