Tufts Athletics Team Member Bailey Finocchio Highlights How Students Can Stay Active and Have Fun |
|
|
| Assistant Director of Recreation & Club Sports and Chair of Physical Education Bailey Finocchio
joined the Tufts Athletics Department in Spring 2022. Since then, she’s hit the ground running (sports pun intended). On any given day, she’s juggling multiple sports recreation programs; here’s a rundown/play-by-play for each:
Club Sports
There are 32 club sports at Tufts, including recently added gymnastics and pickleball. All club sports are student run and funded through the TCU Senate.

Finocchio advises student leaders on game schedules, logistics, managing the budget, and organizing tryouts. While some clubs have tryouts based on the maximum players allowed on their rosters (e.g., soccer, basketball), others have tier team tryouts to see what level fits best (e.g., rugby, Ultimate/frisbee, fencing, ice hockey, karate). Club sport teams practice regularly and compete against other colleges and universities. Finocchio describes it as similar to varsity athletic programs but scaled down with fewer practices and games.
Intramural Sports
Corn hole anyone? Intramural sports run the gamut, from volleyball and basketball to yes, corn hole and again, pickleball! No experience is needed and there are no tryouts. However, there are limited spots so students need to register. Finocchio manages the schedules, spaces, setting up the rules for each sport, and staffing (note: there are student jobs available!). She emphasizes registering early, which happens at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. Intramural sports teams follow a five-week format so students need to be available to meet the same time every week to play another Tufts team, typically in the evenings or on weekends.
One-Day Intramural Tournaments
Each semester Finocchio coordinates special one-day tournaments for a variety of intramural sports; these are open to all students. Teams need to register two days in advance and single students can sign up as a “free agent” to be placed on a team.
Fitness Classes
Available a la carte ($10 a class) or as a mini course (6 for $60), there are a variety of fitness classes added each semester and taught by certified instructors.
Physical Education Classes
Phys Ed "for credit" classes are open to all students and taught by Tufts athletic coaches. According to Finocchio, these are popular electives (particularly golf and basketball) among students across all disciplines and fill up fast.
Lastly, all students have access to the Tisch Sports and Fitness Center
with their Tufts ID to use the Center's weights, treadmills, basketball courts, squash courts, and pool. There are lockers, a sauna, and depending on the season and team usage, some access to the indoor track and tennis courts.
“If students are looking to get engaged in athletics, we can help them find a way to get involved!” said Finocchio. For more information, visit the Tufts Recreation website. For inquiries, contact recreation@tufts.edu.
Students can also email clubsports@tufts.edu to be added to their mailing list and email imsports@tufts.edu to be added to the intramural sports mailing list.

Career Corner: Conversations with the Tufts Career Center |
Help Your Student Build Resiliency
Whether it’s a low exam score or a job/internship rejection, setbacks go hand-in-hand with developing resiliency. Here are 4 tips to support your student:
|
- Be realistic, yet keep the conversation upbeat.
Remind them of their talents and skills. Identify times when they’ve demonstrated resilience; can they apply similar strategies here?
- Invite honesty and openness. If students fear they will disappoint you/others, you may not hear what’s on their minds. Your attitude and expectations set the tone.
- Use open-ended questions.
“Tell me about …”, “What are your thoughts on …?”
- Resist the urge to intervene. Allowing students to face smaller stressors independently will strengthen resiliency for the future.
|
|
|
At the start of every semester, students should review the Academic Calendar
for important deadlines. Coming up: all outstanding incomplete work from Fall 2023 must be submitted by February 28. After this deadline, grades will be submitted to replace the incomplete notation on a student's transcript. If your student would benefit from some guidance about dropping a course, finalizing their major declaration paperwork, or any other advising concern, please remind them that their Advising Team is here to help.
