The Center is an active intellectual hub for students, alumni, faculty and the community to learn from and engage with the judiciary. Central to our mission is developing a space to foster community and build engagement – between our alumni, students and the judiciary and among our cohort of alumni clerks – while enhancing support for our students and alumni pursuing clerkships.
Our fourth year marked a welcome return to normalcy as the COVID-19 pandemic receded.
We are grateful to our alumni community for their incredible support, including the FLAA Alumni Board, our Judicial Council, Faculty Clerkship Committee, Alumni Clerk Council, Peer Clerkship Council and all of the members of the judiciary and clerks who volunteered their time to participate in our initiatives and events.

Judicial Day in Residence in collaboration with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York
|
For the first time since the pandemic, the CJEC hosted its Judicial Day in Residence program. On March 1, the CJEC welcomed 11 judges from the Southern District of New York for a day-long visit which included judges co-teaching classes with our faculty. The capstone event was a Town Hall discussion with a reception.
The CJEC was honored to collaborate with Chief Judge Laura Taylor Swain in developing this year’s Judicial Day in Residence, who commended the program: “Our court was honored by the invitation. My fellow judges and I enjoyed the opportunity to engage with future lawyers and with faculty in the classroom and in less formal settings throughout the day. It was a special experience for all concerned.”

Distinguished Jurist in Residence Lecture: Hon. Bernice Donald (Ret.), U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit
|
In February, the CJEC welcomed Judge Donald to Fordham Law for its 2023 Distinguished Jurist in Residence Lecture.
Judge Donald's lecture titled: "Toward a More Perfect Union: Overcoming Division, Discrimination, and Distance Through the Rule of Law,” explored a number of topics, including the roles implicit bias plays inside and outside the courtroom and ways in which we can overcome such biases to reach a more perfect union.
Over the course of her visit, Judge Donald hosted informal sessions with leaders from our affinity groups, Federalist Society and American Constitution Society.

2022-2023 First to the Bench speaker: Hon. Zahid Quraishi, U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey
|
In October, the CJEC welcomed Judge Quraishi as its featured jurist for its fourth annual community building initiative - the First to the Bench Program.
Judge Quraishi is the first Muslim-American to serve as an Article III judge in the United States, and was the first Asian-American to serve on the federal court in New Jersey upon his appointment as a U.S. magistrate judge for the District of New Jersey in the Trenton Vicinage in 2019.
The law school community - students, alumni, faculty and staff - gathered together to hear from Judge Quraishi in a moderated Fireside Chat which included a robust discussion with the audience. Immediately prior to his Fireside Chat, Judge Quraishi visited informally with a cohort of law student leaders of the First Generation Law Students Group and the Muslim-American Law Students Association as well as students in Fordham Law's IDEAL Program.

During Women's History Month, the CJEC in collaboration with the Fordham Law Alumni Association and Fordham Law Women hosted a panel discussion featuring Fordham Law Women Judges. The event also celebrated the 2022-2023 academic year marking the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Fordham Law Women student organization.
The panel featured Magistrate Judge Katharine Parker ’92 of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Senior Judge Loretta Preska ’73 of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Acting Justice Joanne Quiñones ’97 of the New York Supreme Court in Kings County, and Associate Judge Madeline Singas ’91 of the New York Court of Appeals. U.S. Bankruptcy Court Panel
|
In November, the CJEC hosted a View from Chambers event focusing on the role of the U.S. Bankruptcy court.
The panel featured three distinguished bankruptcy judges from nearby districts - Chief Judge Martin Glenn (Southern District of New York), Chief Judge Ann Nevins (District of Connecticut), and Judge Elizabeth Stong (Eastern District of New York). The lively discussion touched upon emerging issues - such as cryptocurrentcy - and the uniqueness of the dockets in each district - cattle to consumers.
The View from Chambers series is part of the CJEC’s Judicial Engagement through Education Initiative, shining a spotlight on a diverse slate of judges from a range of courts on the federal and state levels.

CJEC Peer Clerkship Council Expands Programming and Initiatives to Strengthen the Clerkships-Oriented Culture
|
Initially conceived and launched in 2020, the CJEC welcomed the third cohort of its peer leadership initiative - the 2022-2023 Peer Clerkship Council.
The Peer Clerkship Council initiative was launched in recognition of the importance of peer engagement to fostering a clerkships-oriented culture at the law school. In year two it has become a mainstay for the CJEC infusing the Center with a dynamic set of student-led initiatives. It has also been a wonderful opportunity to watch our students grow professionally and give back as mentors.
We invite you to read about the work of this year's Peer Clerkship Council.
