Recent Alumna Helps Mayor Lucas Engage Latinx Community

Aly Hernandez (B.A. '19) is passionate about reaching the Latinx community in Kansas City. "I want to help people in the way my family would've wanted to be helped when we first arrived in Kansas City." She worked on Jorge Flores' campaign for Wyandotte County Commissioner (pictured above) and with U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II before becoming the external affairs director for Mayor Quinton Lucas' administration.

She shares her experiences helping the mayor connect with the Latinx community as well as the challenges and rewards of her position. She also shares career tips with fellow Roos.

Mentoring and Making a Difference in Global Women's Health

It may be daunting to have a mentor assigned to you, but for medical student Faith Mueller it's worked out great. Faith is passionate about women's liberation and wants to make a difference in the lives of young girls and women around the world after she finishes her degree and does her OB/GYN residency. Her mentor, Dr. David John, couldn't be more proud and supportive. 
"Faith has the drive and initiative, the passion, to do great things in her career," he said. "As Faith's mentor, I feel my purpose is to be a sounding board and a cheerleader."

Critical Conversations: Join hundreds of Roos and community members for the UMKC-led panel discussions on Zoom as they discuss topics related to systemic racism. Recap the first session on "Systemic Racism in the Workforce" and sign-up for the second session on "The Future of Policing."

Health Equity Q&A Session for Students: Ask health-care professionals the questions you may have and learn ways you can stay safe as you prepare to return to campus, especially those with a pre-existing illness. The Office of Student Involvement Staff will also be on hand to answer any questions about student organization events and the new restrictions that will go into place to help mitigate the spread.
