Dear Eagle Nation:
The spirit of celebration continues to cover the Coppin State University campus after last month’s historic celebration of the Class of 2023. Our university has the privilege of hosting more than two dozen graduation ceremonies for Baltimore City Public Schools.
It is an honor for our institution to host high school graduates and their families as they celebrate a major milestone, make cherished memories, and embark on the next chapter of their lives.

Celebrations began on June 6 with the graduation of the Coppin Academy High School class of 2023. Coppin Academy, a public charter high school, is operated on our campus by Coppin State University, in partnership with Baltimore City Public Schools.
Coppin Academy is a key part of the Coppin campus community, housed at the center of campus. Coppin Academy scholars are exposed to life on a college campus long before they graduate, with opportunities to earn college credit through dual-enrollment, access to academic and other support services through the Eagle Achievement Center, and the opportunity to interact with and benefit from the mentorship of our undergraduate and graduate students, as well as our faculty and staff.

In collaboration with Coppin State University, Coppin Academy continues to build on a culture of excellence. This year, 95% of Coppin Academy graduates were accepted to 2 and 4-year institutions and earned more than $1.5 million in total grants and scholarships. Nearly half of the 2023 graduates were admitted to Coppin State, and 30% of graduates will join us in the fall. Coppin Academy’s valedictorian, Ms. Shania Mathews, and salutatorian, Damonté Halsey, are among the five valedictorians and two salutatorians students who have selected Coppin State as their university of choice.

Coppin Corner Resource Center Opens
Coppin State University has launched Coppin Corner, a new on-campus resource center providing basic food and personal care products to registered Coppin State students.
This is a critical component of the university’s efforts to address food insecurity which can negatively affect student success and retention.
“Coppin Corner will not solve every problem our students face; however, we are hopeful it will allow them to focus more on their studies, and less on where their next meal is coming from," said President Jenkins.

Christa Gilliam, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Social Work, graduated as a member of the Leadership Baltimore County 2023 class, on June 8. Dr. Gilliam was one of 52 leaders selected from a competitive pool of applicants for the 10-month program, which included a mountain retreat, a visit to Tradepoint Atlantic, and learning from other leaders across Baltimore County.

Professor Loretta Baryeh, Ph.D. was honored for her study, Corruption Exacerbation of Economies and Coronavirus, during the 2023 RWI Research World International Conference in New York City.
The paper was a continuation of her previous study examining the effect of the pandemic on economic growth, as well as impacts of corruption. Dr. Baryeh’s study found negative impacts on economic development for countries with higher cases of COVID-19 during the pandemic.

Johnny Rice II DrPH, is the co-author of an op-ed in the Baltimore Sun, discussing the continuing public health crisis of gun violence, as well as its economic and social impacts. Dr. Rice and a group of Coppin student researchers are part of a collective of researchers across the nation, interviewing young black men living in cities to better understand why they possess guns.
Some of the research subjects cited mental health, unemployment, food insecurity, inadequate housing, and substance abuse for their decision to obtain a gun. The soon-to-be published study is expected to reveal additional findings that could help inform future criminal justice and social policies in urban areas.

Coppin State University assistant professor and chair of the Department of Applied Social and Political Sciences, Malcolm Drewery, Ph.D., is featured in a column discussing Baltimore and its use by politicians deflect from issues in their backyard.
“Baltimore is just here, minding its own business, but nobody likes pointing out the discrepancies and issues of the United States. We don’t like to talk about our own problems, so we’d rather talk about what’s going on outside, to make ourselves look better,” said Drewery.

Coppin State Takes Top Honors in the MEAC
Coppin State achieved the MEAC’s highest academic progress rate and, for the second-straight year, was honored for having the conference’s highest
Graduation Success Rate.
Additionally, 59 Coppin State student-athletes have been named to the 2023 Commissioner’s All-Academic Team which honors sophomores, juniors, and seniors with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average.

Coppin State University Assistant Professor Kondwani Russell (also known as Kondwani Fidel) continues his creative collaboration with the Baltimore Orioles. Russell, a poet and essayist, was featured in the unveiling of the Orioles new City Connect jerseys, performing his original work, You Can’t Clip These Wings, which you can watch below.
