So, I recently got married (hence why you haven't heard from me lately). Here's a small synopsis of the latest radio and TV news. We'll be back on Monday July 29 with more news. In the meantime, if you have news for me, please send me an e-mail.
Northeast
Brian Walsh closes on his $200,000 acquisition of Oldies/WLYV (1450am, Fort Wayne) and FM translator W282CH (104.3fm, Fort Wayne) from Adams Radio Group. WLYV is a 1kW AM station with their tower site near South Anthony Boulevard and Hayden Street, along the railroad tracks, just southeast of downtown Fort Wayne. W282CH is a 250 watt FM translator, and their antenna is on the Cass Street tower, just north of West State Boulevard and Wells Street, near downtown Fort Wayne. Kalil & Co., Inc. served as exclusive broker for this sale.
Tonight (Saturday 07/27) at 9pm, the Rick Hughes show ended on WLYV, and a history of radio documentary began airing, along with new owner Brian Walsh voicing some promos about the combination of 1450am, 104.3fm, and his Oldies/WIOE (101.1fm, South Whitley). Sarkes Tarzian's Alternative/WGBJ (102.3fm, Auburn) becomes Alt 102.3.
Before we leave West Berry Street, WAJI-HD2 (95.1-HD2fm, Fort Wayne) and translator W258BY (99.5fm, Fort Wayne) flip to 99.5 The Twenty FM. It's a jockless format, with the top 20 most popular CHR songs in a power rotation.
Jon Zimney will continue as PD of N-T/WTRC-FM (95.3fm, Niles, Michigan), but sister N-T/WOWO will need a new PD. Mr. Zimney programmed WOWO twice: In the 2000s and again more recently. You can see the WOWO PD advertisement in our 'Employment Opportunities' section.
Where Are They Now? Former then-Oasis Radio Group Chief Engineer Morgan Grammer becomes Chief Engineer for the five station Cox Media Group, Tulsa, Oklahoma cluster.
Northcentral
Carli Luca exits as News and Content Director for Kensington Digital Media's N-T/WRSW(AM) (1480am, Warsaw) and translator W259BJ (99.7fm, Warsaw) and News Director at Classic Rock/WRSW-FM (107.3fm, Warsaw) and Country/WAWC (103.5fm, Syracuse). Ms. Luca joined Kensington in 2017 from Lincoln, Nebraska where she anchored the morning news for NRG Media on KLIN.
Sinclair promotes Brian Dodge to GM for CBS and FOX affiliate/WSBT-TV (Channel 22, South Bend) Mr. Dodge gains the promotion from Digital Sales Manager at Sinclair's Pensacola, Florida/Mobile, Alabama market.
Central
Radio One welcomes Denene McNiece as Director of Sales for their five radio stations and television station. Ms. McNiece last worked in a GSM role across town at the former Entercom/Indianapolis stations (WXNT, WNTR, WZPL).
iHeartMedia promotes Kristy Beebe from GSM to Regional SVP/Sales for Kentucky and Indiana. Ms. Beebee will begin her role on August 1, and will have responsibilities for the Indianapolis market along with several Kentucky radio markets. In Indianapolis, iHeart owns Classic Rock/WFBQ (94.7fm, Indianapolis), Alternative/WOLT (103.3fm, Indianapolis), Urban/WZRL (98.3fm, Plainfield), and FOX Sports/WNDE (1260am, Indianapolis).
Southcentral
Where Are They Now? Jeff Weber, former Local Sales Manager at WGCL(AM) and WTTS-FM now leads (GM) six Albany, New York radio stations: Fly 92.3, B95.5, 100.9 The Cat, JAMZ 96.3, Magic 100.5 and 590, and Alt 104.9.
This Week in Indiana Radio History
Sign-on dates seem to be a prickly matter, subject to great debate, and mostly impossible to confirm. If there's something we need to add to the "calendar," please let us know. Please e-mail us if you have updated information.
July 21: In 1969, 99.3fm in Knox signs on as WKVI, and remains so today (WKVI-FM).
July 22: In 1968, WIBC-FM (93.1fm, Indianapolis) became WNAP, but Naptown listeners didn't feel The Wrath of the Buzzard for a few more years.
July 23: In 1973, 89.1fm in Mount Carmel, Illinois signs on as WVJC, and remains so today.
July 24: In 1977, 104.9fm in Rockville signs on as WAXI, and remains so today.
July 25: In 2016, former WIN Communications president George Sosson dies. Age 70. WIN Communications owned then-WIRE (1430am, Indianapolis) and then-WMJC-FM (103.3fm, Indianapolis).
July 27: In 1941, 1310am in Indianapolis signs on as WISH(AM). Today, it's WTLC. In 1974, Channel 46 in South Bend signs on again, as WMSH-TV. Today, it's WHME-TV. Before WMSH-TV, Channel 46 was WNDU-TV, but they moved to Channel 16 in 1957.
