Local Labor Leaders Honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Through Day of Service
Labor leaders spent Martin Luther King, Jr. Day volunteering at Camp Curtin Elementary School, Shalom House Women’s Shelter and Harrisburg First Church of the Brethren. Some projects included cleaning the church nursery and processing a mailing.
During the day, former members of the Harrisburg Giants baseball team were honored with the Keeper of the Dream Award by Harrisburg’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Committee. The award recognizes those who have contributed to interracial understanding and goodwill.
Labor honors the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for not only his civil rights activism, but also his support of workers’ rights. On April 3, 1968, the day before his assassination, Dr. King traveled to Memphis to support AFSCME sanitation workers. That evening, he delivered his famous “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech to a packed room of supporters.
