Phillips Knox Distinguished Teaching Award winner Dr. Hakam Alomari (Computer Science and Software Engineering) reflects on his journey from teaching code to cultivating purpose-driven, evidence-based, relevant, innovative, student-centered learning in software engineering. Gain practical strategies and renewed inspiration to design adaptable, inclusive, and impactful classrooms that prepare students not just to code, but to thrive.

Student-Centered Classroom Activity Development With Generative AI
|
Are you interested in improving your teaching using ChatGPT? This workshop is for instructors who want to increase student engagement. Learn how to center students in discipline-specific, in-class, concept-building/application activities by (1) writing effective ChatGPT prompts; (2) engaging in productive ChatGPT conversations; and (3) replacing teacher-centered lectures with student-centered learning experiences.

Generative AI in the Humanities
|
Drawing on a semester-long study of upper-division history students, this workshop examines how structured AI integration can foster digital literacy in humanities courses. Participants will (1) explore how students shifted from skepticism or overreliance to thoughtful, task-specific engagement with AI and (2) develop criteria for potential AI integrations in their courses. Lunch will be served.

Scholarships for Auburn University’s Asynchronous “Intro to AI” Course |
This self-paced, asynchronous online, interactive, 5-7 hour course has been tested by the CTE, featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education and Inside Higher Ed, and was awarded the 2024 Outstanding Program: Noncredit Award by the UCPEA. The scholarship deadline is September 15.

CTE-IGNITE Grants Deadline: |
The purpose of CTE-IGNITE (Incorporating Generative AI With Novel Ideas for Teaching Excellence) grants is to encourage scholarly teaching around the opportunities and challenges presented by Generative AI. There are 3 levels of grants available.
|

|
Major Teaching Project Grant Proposal Deadline: October 15, 2025 |
Submit a CTE major teaching project grant proposal (up to $3,000). These grants encourage curricular and pedagogical innovations that result in more engaged and improved student learning. Innovations may be at the course, department, division, and/or university levels.
|

E. Phillips Knox Distinguished Teaching Award Nomination Deadline: October 15, 2025 |
This award was established by Miami alumnus E. Phillips Knox, a 1968 graduate, to recognize creative, innovative, and engaging teaching methods at the undergraduate level.

The schedule for the 44th Original Lilly Conference on College Teaching (November 20-22 at Armstrong Student Center) is now available! Take a few moments to review the exciting program of sessions on evidence-based teaching and learning by teacher-scholars from Miami and across the U.S. Conference registration is also open. Registration fees for Miami faculty, graduate students, and staff are subsidized by the CTE (or free—see below!).

We offer two types of consultations at the CTE. Both are confidential.

If you are conducting a midcourse evaluation, you can meet with one of our Faculty Teaching associates, who will help you either plan your midcourse evaluation or interpret results and create a plan for an instructional response. Spots for these consultations fill quickly; request yours today.

If you or your department want to investigate new (or fine-tune existing) teaching strategies, methods, and opportunities, you can meet with the CTE Director (Ellen Yezierski) or the Assistant Director (Gregg Wentzell).
