Dear Friends and Neighbors, |

|
The Spring semester is well underway at Villanova, and we are looking forward to the promise of warmer days ahead.
While our walks on campus may be shorter in the cold weather, there are many ways to enjoy Villanova this winter.
Read on for information on what's new at the Art Gallery, the Mullen Center and the Refectory. We also invite you to join us for stimulating conversation in Falvey Library, and please save the date for an upcoming neighbors meeting.
Please reach out to neighbors@villanova.edu with any questions. We look forward to seeing you on campus in 2025!

Super Bowl Commercials Rely on Comedy and Nostalgia to Avoid Potential Missteps
Associated Press
This year’s Super Bowl commercials went for easy laughs and nostalgia, largely steering clear of controversy and leaving the surprises on the football field, where the Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Kansas City Chiefs. Charles Taylor, a marketing professor at Villanova University’s School of Business, noticed more gross-out humor than usual. He said such ads do get attention, but the yuck-factor could backfire.

The Philadelphia Inquirer (subscription may be required to view)
One year after the Civil War ended, Hagar Outlaw, a formerly enslaved woman in North Carolina, was desperate to find eight of her children who had been sold during slavery. She turned to Philadelphia’s Christian Recorder and placed an “Information Wanted” ad. Falvey Library Speaker's Corner: Monday, March 10th |
Join author Judith Giesberg, PhD, Robert M. Birmingham Chair in the Humanities and Professor of History, and editor Bob Bender ’70 CLAS, vice president and executive editor at Simon & Schuster, on Monday, March 10, at 4 p.m. in Falvey Library’s Speakers’ Corner for a discussion of the book, moderated by Crystal Lucky, PhD, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Professor of English. Dr. Giesberg’s book is a product of her ongoing project “Last Seen: Finding Family After Slavery,” which aims to identify, digitize, transcribe and publish thousands of newspaper ads placed by formerly enslaved people who were eager to reconnect with loved ones. Dr. Giesberg will delve into her extensive research and the stories that shaped her book. Bender worked closely with Dr. Giesberg as her editor at Simon & Schuster, where he spent his publishing career. Bringing together the author and editor perspectives, Dr. Giesberg and Bender will give a behind-the-scenes look into the research, writing, editing and collaboration it took to publish Last Seen, the first book of its kind to bring these heart-wrenching narratives to life. The talk will be followed by a book signing and light reception. The event is free and open to the public. Cosponsored by The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Falvey Library.
