ANOTHER UPDATE ON PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
October 18-19

The response to the new online scheduling system has been strong.  Many teachers' schedules are now full for this event. If you find a schedule is full and still wish to talk with your student’s teacher, please feel free to email or phone him/her directly.  If you find your schedule has changed for the October 18 or 19, or you have spoken to the teacher prior to conferences, feel free to cancel the appointment in the PickATime scheduler to allow another family to schedule that time with the teacher.
Conferences are scheduled for 10 minutes.  Time will be noted during the evenings to keep conferences on schedule.

Loves About Brebeuf
I love the atmosphere and friendly environment at Brebeuf.  People are very nice, and always go out of their way to talk to you and make you feel welcome. I came from Carmel public schoolsl and it just wasn’t the same. At Brebeuf, I can both respect the teachers and administration and have a more personal relationship with them. I find it a lot easier to learn from someone you care about.
Favorite Class
It is really hard to pick one, because I enjoy different classes for different reasons.  For the material, it was AP Physics 1 with Mr. Rott.  He is a great teacher, and while it was certainly a difficult class, it was fun and I looked forward to going to that class everyday.
Future Plans
I hope to attend Purdue University for computer science - my heart is pretty much set on that.  I am not entirely sure on the specific area of computer science though.  I am learning programming now, which I have enjoyed, but what strikes me is that, I play a lot of video games and I am fascinated with the ability for computers to replicate the real world. I want to push the boundaries on digital environments to be more realistic and replicate the laws of nature in a computer.

Random Fact
I have danced with the king of Sweden. In 2012, I attended the National Boy Scout Jamboree. This was a special event that had all the international groups as well. The King of Sweden, who is also a scout, was a guest and attended wearing his Swedish scout uniform.  He taught us a dance with traditional Swedish music and everyone in attendance danced along with him.
Is Brebeuf as academically rigorous as they say?
Brebeuf is as rigorous as the claims say. On some level, it depends on what class you take, but overall, I have found that every class challenges you to think deeper, write more, and study longer to achieve true mastery of the subject. Because of this, the general homework load can be a considerable amount, but I have found that I almost always leave the chapter knowing the material thoroughly, and if not, my teachers are always available to help me understand when I fall behind.
What do you think of…
Apple getting rid of the headphone jack on the iPhone?
At face value, I am upset with the idea of an iPhone without a headphone jack, mainly because I have a pretty nice pair of earbuds and I don't like the idea of having a barrier to using my favorite headphones that I have been using for years. However, I would like to think that there is a reason for removing it. And if removing that jack is what allowed for a more powerful processor or a longer battery life, than I am perfectly fine with that change. Sure it might be annoying to use an adapter with my earbuds, but hey, it seems like a pretty small complaint for a magical brick that is many times more powerful than anything that existed ten years ago.

Help Brebeuf Jesuit by Completing a Technology Survey

The school has partnered with BrightBytes, an educational research organization, to explore Brebeuf's use of technology for learning, and student use of technology in general. The data collected will be used to help us to evaluate our Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) program, use of technology in classrooms (and outside of them), and guide us in our decision making.
The survey is completely web-based, can be taken from any connected device, and should take about 10 minutes to complete.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact JD Ferries-Rowe at  jdferries@amdg.brebeuf.org or via Twitter: @jdferries.
Thank you for being a part of this initiative,

Volunteer Opportunities Now Available for Brebeuf Moms at Dayspring

Every Thursday, a group of four or five students, a Brebeuf Jesuit teacher, and a Brebeuf Mom will be traveling to the Dayspring Center (a homeless shelter for families) to serve lunch and engage in conversation with the staff and residents. This will be an opportunity for Moms to join students to learn more about homelessness in Indianapolis. This is the third year of our partnership with Dayspring and we have found it to provide truly meaningful service experiences.
The group typically leaves school at 11:00 a.m. and returns by 2:00 p.m.
You or your student can sign up for a trip to Dayspring by clicking here.
If you have any questions regarding our weekly trips to Dayspring, please contact Nick Klingler at nklingler@brebeuf.org.

Student Reflectors at Brebeuf Jesuit Masses

Throughout the school year, Brebeuf Jesuit hosts a number of all-school Masses.  Typically, a student is selected to stand up and share a personal reflection at each of these Masses based on conversations with campus ministry, their teachers, administration, and myriad other ways. As these reflections usually result in impactful and inspiring moments for both the reflector and our community, Brebeuf Jesuit wanted to open up that process to the entire student body.
How will this work?
All students who have an interest in providing a reflection at one of Brebeuf’s Masses can do so by completing a short the interest form.
This form will ask each interested student why they wish to share their reflection, and what their reflection would entail. Once the form is submitted, it will be reviewed, and if selected, the student will be contacted to set up a meeting to discuss further.
The form can be accessed by clicking here.
Please note that due to the high number of students who may wish to share a reflection, we will obviously be unable to accommodate all the requests we will receive.
We are excited to provide this opportunity to our students, and we look forward to hearing from them in the coming weeks.

Barcelona Exchange Trip 2017

This long-standing exchange program is an excellent opportunity for Brebeuf students to experience family life in a completely new culture! Students are immersed in the Spanish language, living with host families in Barcelona and attending school daily with their host student.  In addition to the host family experience, students will partake in many cultural excursions, among which is a full-day excursion to Manresa and Montserrat, two places with deep Jesuit roots. Students will also tour the world-renowned Gaudí masterpiece, the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, other Gaudí architectural wonders, and many other sites that are particular to Barcelona and Catalonian culture.
Two Brebeuf faculty or staff members will accompany the students and will be available to the students during their stay.  As a result of participating in the Barcelona Exchange Program, Brebeuf students gain confidence and proficiency in Spanish. They may even learn a bit of Catalán, the other official language of the region!  The experience is unforgettable and truly gives students a taste of the world beyond the doors of Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School.
