Student Spotlight

ETHAN KROHNE '18

Loves About Brebeuf

I think that my favorite thing about Brebeuf is probably how close the community here really is. I transferred to Brebeuf after my freshman year and the first thing I noticed once transferring was how much easier it is to meet people at Brebeuf. I feel like Brebeuf students are always trying to reach out and meet each other. Also, Brebeuf students are super supportive. You can find students supporting their classmates at just about any sporting event, performance, or competition which I think shows how much students really love each other here.
Favorite Class
My favorite class right now is probably Newspaper. I have had a lot of fun being able to write about my friends and things at Brebeuf that I find interesting while also being able to learn about journalism. I also really enjoy my Economics class with Mr. Mayer because it is something I find really interesting.
Future Plans
Next year I will be attending DePauw University where I will major in Political Science.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
Hockey Team
Chief's Award
Lacrosse Team
Pine Ridge Cultural Immersion trip 2016, 2017, and this coming summer
Belize Cultural Immersion trip 2017
K99 G5
Freshman Retreat Leader
I also work as a lifeguard
Random Facts
I have two dogs named Reggie and T.Y. because my family names our dogs after Colts players.
I am colorblind.
What is your current favorite show or series on tv, Netflix, etc?
Definitely, The Office.
What are your plans for Spring Break?
I’m going to travel to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic with my family this year. I am super excited for the trip because I have never been to an Island in the Caribbean before!
For those students who have not experienced the Pine Ridge Cultural Immersion trip, what would you tell them about it and would you recommend they attend?
I would tell them that there are so many reasons to go on the trip at least once during their time in high school. For starters, the trip is so much fun and it is a great way to meet your classmates and develop a friendship with them outside of school. Even if you are someone who doesn’t have much outdoors experience it is impossible not to enjoy camping, hiking, and hanging out with other Brebeuf students. More importantly, being able to live on a reservation is one of the most amazing experiences that I have had during my time in high school. I can honestly say that I have learned just as much about myself and the world around me on Pine Ridge that I have during my four years in high school.
If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go and why?
Anywhere in Africa. I’m not really sure where I would want to go in Africa because there are just so many amazing countries and ecosystems to choose from. I think if I had to choose where I’d go in Africa I’d probably chose somewhere in eastern Africa so I could go on a Safari.
You are now in your final semester at Brebeuf Jesuit.  Has it sunk in yet?
I’m trying so hard to hold off senioritis right now. It’s definitely sinking in that I only have a couple weeks left at Brebeuf because I’m now starting to plan for the transition to college. However, even though I know I need to prepare for next year I’m trying to spend as much time as I can right now enjoying high school and spending time with the people who have made these past 4 years so great.
In what way have you changed the most since your freshman year?
I think the way that I want to live my life has changed the most. Going into freshman year, I thought the main goal of life was to become financially successful, settle down, and start a family. I think because of my opportunities to travel with other Brebeuf students and go to places where that is not necessarily the main goal in life, I have realized that there is so much more to life than just that route. I think accomplishing any of those three things in life would be awesome but I believe that just being happy and having the opportunity to travel and gain an enhanced understanding of the world around us is so much more vital to living a “successful life."
Scholarship/Financial Aid News and Announcements
The backbone of all financial aid is the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) which opened on October 1 at www.fafsa.gov and should be completed as soon as possible for the 2018-19 year. Many schools also require completion of the CSS Profile CSS Profile, administered by the College Board, which asks more specific questions and accesses additional funds. The FAFSA is free; the CSS Profile has a small fee.
The VAST majority of scholarships (merit aid) are found within the individual college admission/financial aid websites and academic departments. Be on the lookout for additional essays, recommendations/nominations, and deadlines for these opportunities at the colleges to which you’ve applied.
Search for a specific scholarships in Naviance Family Connection in the “Scholarship List” under the Colleges tab. Sort by Scholarship name, Deadline, or Categories. Websites such as Scholarships.com and Fastweb.com are useful as well.
