BNIM presents in the AIA KC 'Show Your Work' series at Palomar Community College's Maintenance and Operations Complex

This June, BNIM teamed up with our clients and collaborators at Palomar Community College in San Marcos, California, to host a virtual tour of the Maintenance and Operations Complex as part of AIA Kansas City's new Show Your Work series. The event showcased the design approach for this dynamic Net-Zero energy facility on Palomar campus and included an engaging discussion of high-performance strategies for community college projects. The livestream event presented by AIA San Diego and AIA Kansas City is now available to watch online.

The Gerdin Business Building expansion for the Ivy College of Business at Iowa State University creates a dynamic nexus and intellectual center for the University. The design expands the College’s ability to foster collaboration and innovation among business scholars through modern teaching methodologies, impactful research, and community engagement.

A welcoming, daylight-filled lobby is now the heart of the College, serving as a connective tissue between the new expansion and original building. Strategic spatial organization, refined programming, and simplicity in design have resulted in seamless integration of the expansion with the ISU campus. Increased pedagogical spaces and universal design strategies enhance the student, faculty, and visitor experience.

BNIM was featured in episode eight of My World Too: Season 1 during the month of June. This new television series, which aired on 225 PBS Stations across the country including Kansas City, NYC, San Francisco, Chicago and DC, tackles global issues such as food production, clean energy, and housing. My World Too is hosted by Mike Wunsch and features inspirational stories of environmental stewardship, organic practices, and Earth-friendly innovations that viewers can learn from.

In this segment, Steve McDowell, Jeremy Knoll, Dana Sorensen, and Joyce Raybuck discuss BNIM’s commitment to sustainable building practices, and what it looks like to build sustainably within our communities.

For the 21st year of the West 18th Street Fashion Show, BNIM was selected along with six other local Kansas City architecture firms to create a backdrop that reflected the theme for this year’s show: "Summer Tableau." This year's theme was based around the themes of the 1960s counterculture movement, and BNIM worked in collaboration with AL Huber to design and fabricate a backdrop for local fashion designer, Craig Rohner. BNIM’s design for the backdrop is inspired by the psychedelic patchwork-clad geodesic domes of the Drop City commune in Colorado. Sustainable and cost-effective materials were top priority for the design which led to the idea of upcycling old billboard vinyl to create the patchwork of the dome.
