Call for SUNY Diversity Fellows
Many of you are aware that SUNY has a new General Education Framework (GE) and that it will launch in fall 2023 for first-time students entering AA-, AS-, and baccalaureate-degree programs and effective fall 2024 for new first-time students entering AAS- and AOS-degree programs. The GE program features ten categories of knowledge and skills and two core competencies. One of the ten GE knowledge and skills categories is Diversity: Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice (DEISJ), which is a new requirement.
In an effort to build capacity for the implementation of DEISJ, SUNY Provost-in-Charge Shadi Sandvik has issued a call for applications for a SUNY Diversity Fellows Program. The program’s intent is to develop faculty-to-faculty discussions and mentorship in DEISJ content development and implementation and to enhance the development of subject area expertise to offer DEISJ GE courses.
The SUNY Diversity Fellows Program is described here and the call for nominations can be accessed here. The deadline to submit applications is March 31, 2023 and notifications will be transmitted May 10, 2023. The first cohort of DEISJ Fellows is expected to begin June 1, 2023 and to serve through May 31, 2024. Approximately 15 Fellows will be named, each will receive $15,000, and the Fellow must commit to the position for one-year.
SUNY New Paltz faculty who are interested in serving as DEISJ Fellows may self-nominate (instructions are in the links provided above). While self-nominations are encouraged, some coordination at the campus level must be exercised. Consequently, we are asking faculty who apply to let Associate Provost Laurel M. Garrick Duhaney know via SUNYDiversityFellows@newpaltz.edu and to inform your chair and dean that you are submitting an application. The application form requires applicants to indicate whether they will use release time or extra service if they receive the Fellowship. Please be advised that the campus will support the use of the Fellowship for extra service.
Diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice are key to our mission and we are fully committed to inclusive excellence. Thus, we support this SUNY capacity-building initiative which seeks to develop faculty-to-faculty mentorship and expertise in DEISJ subject matter. We hope faculty who are engaged in and committed to DEISJ work will consider applying to become Diversity Fellows.
Thank you.
