ACA Launches “TV Ransom” To Highlight Broadcasters’ Abusive Behavior With Retransmission Consent Resulting In Consumer Harm

Timed with the 25th Anniversary of the 1992 Cable act that allowed local TV stations to start charging cable companies for their signal, The American Cable Association recently launched a national campaign to set the record straight regarding Broadcasters; for out-of-control retransmission consent fees and TV station blackouts. These fees and blackouts blindside consumers with the needless loss of their favorite news, weather reports, and national sporting and entertainment events.

This campaign shows the rising costs of your TV bill are lining the pockets of the broadcasters themselves. Each month, a significant portion of your local TV bill is passed on to Network and Broadcast station owners (Networks or Programmers). Each TV provider (i.e. ValuNet Fiber) is charged a fee per channel, per month, per customer, for the right to provide that station or Network to its customers. When contracts come to an end, we try to negotiate new agreements but sometimes, a Programmer will demand a significant increase in it's Network fees.

If we do not stand strong against these increases, your bill just keeps going up. Due to the practice of our program providers (CBS, NBC, ESPN, FOX, DISNEY, and others), we have been forced to implement annual price increases and raise our rates for TV programming in the past and are concerned that there seems to be no end to program providers raising their rates at every opportunity. Our only response is to either drop the channel from our lineup or pay the higher rate.

We at ValuNet Fiber feel we must keep you informed on this subject as much as possible. If you have questions or wish to learn more about which Programmers are increasing fees, please go to http://www.americancable.org/ or feel free to contact us at any time.

Respectfully,
ValuNet FIBER
