"Ancient origin of the rod bipolar cell pathway in the vertebrate retina"
|
Night vision is facilitated by the rod pathway, consisting of rod bipolar cells and specific amacrine cells. While traditionally believed to exist only in mammals, recent research demonstrates that zebrafish also possess the rod pathway. This discovery positions zebrafish as a valuable model system for investigating night blindness. Furthermore, the research uncovers an additional rod pathway in zebrafish that warrants further exploration. By studying neural circuits in different species, we can broaden our range of model systems for understanding human diseases.
