Dear Pirates,

I am pleased to announce that after being without a chaplain for two and a half years, Ron Swain will be returning to SU to serve as the campus chaplain and director of religious and spiritual life. He brings with him more than 40 years of experience in higher education and community activism. Please join me in extending to him a warm Pirate welcome.

I would like to recognize Katya Piekarski ’24, SGA President, for her outstanding presentation at the Board of Trustees meeting last week.

Shoutout to the talented student quartet of Seth Sagen ’26, James Yun ’24, Ami Corral Arras ’24, and Sam Guven ’26 who performed at the President’s Appreciation Dinner on Friday. 

Another worthy mention is one of my FYS students, Luke Hatcher ’26, who did an excellent job reciting the following Dickinson poem in my class yesterday. 

I dwell in Possibility –
A fairer House than Prose –
More numerous of Windows –
Superior – for Doors –

Of Chambers as the Cedars –
Impregnable of eye –
And for an everlasting Roof
The Gambrels of the Sky –

Of Visitors – the fairest –
For Occupation – This –
The spreading wide my narrow Hands
To gather Paradise. 

With Halloween right around the corner, I want to hear from the community about any SU-related ghost stories you have! Submit your stories here, and we’ll share some with you in a couple of weeks. Also, be on the lookout for Halloween inflatables that will be gracing campus in the next few days.

I will miss everyone at today’s sweet surprise–I am attending the Annapolis Group board meeting, but I will be back in plenty of time for my weekly walk on Friday at 7:30 a.m. Per Halloween tradition, I will be baking my spider web sugar cookies.  

This weekend, head to Birkelbach Field to cheer on the football team as they take on Hardin-Simmons.
