Researchers led by Tajana Simunic-Rosing, a UC San Diego computer science professor, received a $35 million grant from the Semiconductor Research Corporation to create the PRISM center, which aims to make computing orders of magnitude faster and more efficient. Researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography have found that “precipitation shocks,” whether droughts or flood-causing rains, can increase rates of diarrheal diseases among children in tropical low-to- middle-income countries. Using samples from an almost century-old, ongoing survey of marine plankton, researchers at the School of Medicine suggest that rising levels of manmade chemicals found in parts of the world’s oceans might be used to monitor the impact of human activity on ecosystem health.
