Message from Jean-Jacques Rousseau
| |
| Fellow Schulich Alumni,
My name is Jean-Jacques Rousseau (MBA '06), and I am pleased to contribute to this special Black History Month issue!
When I was choosing business schools, I chose the Schulich MBA because it was the most welcoming. Since then, the value of diversity and the need for inclusion have become more urgent. I take our work to include promoting effective leadership, studying organizational performance, and seeking to improve individual, team and firm performance. Today, leadership is most effective when it is grounded in social justice, and organizations are highest-performing when they are inclusive. The School is in the process of reviewing its courses to ensure that learning outcomes are aligned with these new expectations of the marketplace and of society.
This builds on a long history at the School. Speaking to students of the Schulich business certificate program at the Blackhurst Cultural Centre, Professor Ashwin Joshi summarised the goal of business in two words: profit and purpose. I invite you to visit the EDI @ Schulich webpage to learn about this and similar initiatives. A significant milestone is the new MBA specialization called Leading Equitable, Diverse and Inclusive Organizations launched last fall.
The road ahead is long and uncertain. As the American actor, Denzel Washington advised: “Without commitment, you’ll never start. More importantly, without consistency you’ll never finish”. Schulich is demonstrating commitment. As an alumni community, I call on you to join the school’s positive efforts to ensure its consistency. Help us understand how to make decolonization, equity, diversity, and inclusion relevant to individual and organizational success. Connect with Black students as a mentor, an employer, a guest speaker, and/ or a donor, and more.
Everything above applies to all equity-seeking communities. Black History Month is followed by Inclusion Week (March 6 - 10). Please take a moment to acknowledge systemic injustices and deploy the insights from business education to work towards a more inclusive and equitable future with more access, belonging and student success.
Cheers,
Jean-Jacques Rousseau (MBA '06) | PhD
Advisor to the Office of the Dean & Lecturer, Schulich School of Business

What a fantastic time it was to have such a great group of “Schuligans” gathered under one roof in San Francisco and Los Angeles on January 31 and February 1. We're proud of what our Schulich Alumni Community in California has accomplished and can't wait to build on the momentum.
Coming up, we have exciting plans for the year ahead, and we will be hosting more alumni events to engage with our Schulich community here in Canada and around the globe. Stay tuned to learn more about the Dean’s upcoming visits to Ottawa, Montreal, Paris, Frankfurt, and London.
